Get me started with surf music

Post by mcalllisterra » Tue Mar 25, 2014 5:01 am

So I have a Jazzmaster and a Deluxe Reverb. I've been in a band for a long time, playing more poppy stuff, but lately I've heard a bit of surf music that I never really paid attention to before, and it's kinda got me wanting to get into it. The problem is, the majority of it has no lyrics so is very hard to identify.

Can you guys point me in the right direction with some awesome surf music? It can be new or old, just anything to get me started or some names to look out for.

Thanks! 8)

Slacktone.
Great ripping Jag tons and some incredible playing all around.
The artist formerly known as kosmonautmayhem.

Dick Dale should certainly be checked out, as should The Ventures.

Man? or Astroman? are a kind of punk infused modern surf act that are pretty awesome.

That's all I've got, I personally find surf more interesting as an influence than a full blown genre.

Some of these aren't strictly "surf" but they all have the vibe for sure:

The Ghastly Ones
Satan's Pilgrims
Messer Chups
Laika and the Cosmonauts
Bambi Molesters
Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet
Pollo Del Mar

Omar Khorshid ' The king of Arabic guitarists.'

Rakset el Fadaa nearly makes me pee my pants with excitement when they let loose the percussion half way through.

It's a homage and a bit of apastiche but I love Trentemøller: Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider Go!!!

Weatherall remix is boss too but it's more a twangy slo mo glam hokeycokey twist

Saw Dick Dale in 99 one of the best shows I've ever seen. MOAM is a great band as well, seen them at least a half a dozen times. The ventures are the most popular instrumental surf band, I have some of their early records, they are best on vinyl.

I just saw this all girl band open for of Montreal last Halloween called La Luz. They have that surf thing going and sounded pretty damn sweet. As far as old school The Ventures are the bees knees.

I also like my surf with a Middle Eastern flavor.

From "Hasheeda" by the great Treble Spankers (Amsterdam)
Jaa-Rabbi

Here's another of theirs as covered by the Maderia (a great band to check out in their own right)
Dilmohammed

I like this one by Dick Dale even more than Miserlou:
The Victor

The amazing Surf Coasters from Japan. It gets a little more shreddy than I like, but a modern classic.
Intruder

The Space Cossacks.
The Apes of Wrath

Lots of good suggestions already. I was just about to mention Space Cossacks and The Madeira, but scottT has beaten me to it. Another good modern band is Los Twang! Marvels. Surf- Age Nuggets is a great 4-disc sampling of some of the more under-the-radar instrumental stuff from1959-66, well worth picking up.

The "Best of 60s Instrumental Guitar" series is a pretty good primer. Here's vol 1.
