Post by venompstinger » Thu Oct 02, 2014 4:05 am

I know all of you guys and gals are purveyors of fine taste, so list 'em! - Good ones or lesser known but good ones!

Like my friend told me about these few:

Jandek: Jandek on Corwood: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jandek_on_Corwood
A Silver Mt Zion: Come Worry With Us! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3380392/
Cosmic Psychos: Blokes You Can Trust: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4Q6O8irbyI

there is a thread with music documentaries downloads.

as for the ones that I enjoyed in the past:
The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye (2011)
Pulp: A Film About Life, Death & Supermarkets (2014)
Dig! (2004)
Until the Light Takes Us (2008)
Screaming Masterpiece (2005)
Autoluminescent: Rowland S. Howard (2011)

I think they are all interesting to watch, if you're not a fan of some particular artist/band.

Also, I've missed the screening but really want to see Nick Cave - 20,000 Days On Earth (2014).

I went to the premiere of this. The film itself is well made; it tries not to be a stereotypical 'music documentary', but it made me dislike Nick a lot. What kind of person pays four staff to maintain an archive dedicated to themselves? A fucking narcissistic arsehole trying to generate and maintain a cult of personality.

Some good ones are:

Instrument - Fugazi
Slow Century - Pavement
Slint - Slow Century
American Hardcore
The Decline of Western Civilization
Stop Making Sense - Talking Heads
Also, not linked to any specific artist/band but All Tomorrow's Parties is great.

The Muscle Shoals film was really good, nice to see how many classic r&b and soul tracks came out of there when I always thought it was a southern rock sort of thing. http://www.magpictures.com/muscleshoals/

20 feet from Stardom was also pretty cool, http://twentyfeetfromstardom.com/

I didn't know there was an SMZ documentary, must get hold of that. The Fugazi one is well worth seeing, especially for Guy Picciotto and the basketball hoop and the meticulous van stowing.

This is a great film (even if you don't like Wilco, it's an interesting view of being in a band)
Wilco - I Am Trying To Break Your Heart http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_Tryin" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... bout_Wilco

My wife is a big fan of The Frames and we watched this last night. Some impressive performances:
The Frames - In The Deep Shade http://inthedeepshade.theframes.ie/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And I am going to see this tonight in Oxford:
Big Star - Nothing Can Hurt Me http://www.bigstarstory.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Watched Petey and Ginger recently.
Petey is Petey Dammit from the Oh Sees. It's not the best made doco but it is an interesting insight into Petey's life.

And I can't go past a doco thread without a bit of self promotion, if you like the Triffids go out and find/buy/steal (but then send me the $$$) it's raining pleasure.

@ andrew__t yes the SMZ doco is about the band *and* how hard it is to be a touring band these days.

A similar doco (which is also pretty good) is The Fauves: 15 Minutes to Rock.

You can watch the whole thing here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKwEFNCYHdI

Some Kind Of Monster was pretty funny... I liked when the highly paid life coach was trying to write Metallica lyrics. ;D

I thought you might have posted We're Livin' on dog Food.

I'm personally not too bothered with documentaries on music or videos or live films. I'd rather play a record or see a band live and most of the documentaries don't exactly make me like the artist more.

D
Are you loathsome tonight?

meeting people is easy-radiohead (won't exactly make you want to be a sucessful musician, but some nice lofi cinematography sequences)
30 century man-scott walker
a joyful noise- sun ra
paths through the labyrinth- penderecki

all tomorrows parties- i second that one might rewatch it now!

I don't usually go in for them. like a current bbc one about kate bush was interesting at times, then you have to watch artists which for some reason was mostly comedians you don't like that have satirised her talking about why they like her music as if it adds anything at all.
