Beach House is playing for free at the Sub Pop 30th anniversary show next month. It’s going to be a madhouse, but I’ll probably go.
Well, it was amazing. Rode bikes in with some friends to avoid the traffic shitshow. Another friend who was out of town offered his apartment a few blocks away to stash bikes and as a place to hang out and also said “Drink the Chimay in my fridge. It’s not really my thing.”

So we watched Hot Snakes, drank good beer hanging on his porch with a view of Puget Sound, then went back out and caught Wolf Parade. We left a little early to stake out a spot for Beach House. They played as the sun was setting and aside from a 5 minute sprinkle the rain held off. They played a good mix of old and new material and sounded amazing. Ran in an old friend/ former bandmate and we were both blown away.

Then we booked it home. It was a beautiful night for a ride.
That sounds like a perfect night man!

I missed the sub pop thing because of the aforementioned traffic shitshow. Fuckin' Alki, man. I wanted to see the Fastbacks, but there was just no getting there. Oh well.

I'm gonna go see Cheap Trick and Joan Jett next month, I think. Should be good fun. After all these years, I have yet to "do the puyallup", and it's the same with a lot of my friends. We're looking forward to riding rides and eating corn dogs and elephant ears and whatever other fair food and then enjoying a good old fashioned rock show.

Was supposed to go see Face to Face in a few weeks because Austin Lucas was opening, but he bailed to play a show in Florida with Chuck Ragan and Jason Isbell (which tbh, yeah that sounds like a way better show).

The week after, Iron Chic are in Syracuse, so I'll probably go to that.

Japanese Breakfast last night in Madison, was fucking perfect.

First, the fun trivialities: the bassist was lefty, and the drummer looked like Roy (Chris O'Dowd) from the first two seasons of The IT Crowd, when Roy had a kind of curly mullet.

The set list was great: they played a new song from a hopefully upcoming album, a ton of stuff from their 2 currently released albums, 2 stripped down songs (2 slower songs from Soft Sounds From Another Planet), and they covered Dreams by The Cranberries. The place went ape-shit when they started playing Dreams. Michelle's vocal range was perfect for covering Dolores'.

Instrumentals were very tight all around, especially the drummer and bassist, and there was plenty of vocal harmonies with the drummer. Michelle played her white JM the whole time, with the exception of a song or two where she only sang, and the second guitarist, her husband, also played keyboards a bit. Michelle had a little sampler next to her which she played with (notably the vocal stuff towards the end of Road Head). Michelle and her husband both did rhythm and lead guitar, which was really cool. They faked out the audience with the intro sounds from the title track to Psychopomp, and went into Diving Woman. At the end of the song, Michelle and her husband were strumming this epic noise, and he went in for a kiss. It was kinda cute.

THIS is how rock-type concerts should be. Simple and fun, played by people who know their instruments and their songs, and who very obviously love doing what they do. They were all having so much fun, and the energy was incredible. Watching her play and sing, as well as just chatting with the crowd like a normal person chatting over a beer or dinner, I can honestly say that Michelle Zauner was MADE for songwriting and performing. I've never seen someone so comfortable on stage like that. Her dress was kinda cool too, a sleeveless, open-backed thing, with the back material hanging like a cape. Please excuse the comparison to another Asian woman, but she reminded me of Tia Carrerre in Wayne's World: just this awesome rocker chick kicking fucking ass.

This is a little zoomed in, but I had a really great spot to stand.

One of the best shows I've ever seen.

Preoccupations and Protomartyr in November. And it's at Lee's Palace (small venue), so it should be a good show 8)

ELO's gonna be coming through early next year. Tickets on sale in a couple of days.

Joe Jackson coming through. Also Elvis Costello. And Carrie Akre's gonna be putting a show on, too.

I gotta figure out what the Portland dates are gonna be.

Only tickets I have purchased are for Sleep in December - hopefully Matt Pike's toe amputation will have healed by then.

Oh hey, Austin Lucas went on to announce a headlining tour, and he's playing in Syracuse this Friday. So that'll be cool.
