I've liked the royer when its been used on everything. (There are other countless 'ribbons with top end' though so maybe there is alternatives)?

Everything else perhaps depends on the amp. A flat large dynamic like RE20, and LDC or a SDC?
you have sm57 covered- maybe there are some better or worse contenders (i used an electrovoice CO4 and preferred it...which is good for 25% price- but then maybe some use SM7 and go the other direction!))
But its like what amp and effect are yiu heading for, really might determine what to use. E.g. AC30s need a bit more consideration of the top end imo when miccing.
..but something like the Royer probably would cover everything if using two mics tbh.

What does your room sound like? Because of the environments I’ve recorded in best results came from 57s because of rejection etc.

We tend to record in our rehearsal space so lots of spill but we use gobos and careful placement to minimise this. It's a bright and snappy room.

At home, if I do any tracking its a small and very dead room, with nothing else to spill into it so I can use what I like.

For the $$ Royer R10 + MD421
What id use for a little more Royer R121 + MD441

For that budget, an Ox. I bought the UA Ox and I haven't looked back.

I can't wait to start using ribbons on the cabs. I have tried many dynamic mics, and some condensers. The condensers were awful up close, but in the room they are great. I love the D112 for close mics, I liked those more than the Senny 421. SM57 are fabulous for isolating but they lack erhm, body / girth / woof / substance. They sounded tinny. I have a beta 57 that is much better than the regular 57, but the D112 sounds the best for my amps and style (super loud clean surf).
