Reaper supports VST and DX effects and instruments, Sound Forge supports VST and DX effects.

Really, for a limited budget and with limited hardware resources, Pro Tools is not an option anyway. Plus I hate anything with "Pro" in the name, it's so pretentious.

Hehe you're right about the "Pro", that's what turned me away from the program in the beginning. But then again, when I started out with Logic, I used to think "why'd they call this Logic?" SoundForge: Best wave editing program ever.

I'm a little late again, Pingu and northern_dirt are right about the "wrappers" you need for VST/ProTools compatibility. I can remember synching Reason and ProTools via Re-Wire though, but it was a hassle having two sequencers running at the same time. Stuff like that will drive you crazy if you don't use two monitors.
