Out and in from Preamp to compressor

Post by saturday » Mon Mar 17, 2008 2:35 pm

Very simple question:

I want to run my dbx preamp through a compressor. On the back of the dbx 386 there is an input, output and insert.

How do I run the chords out and back in from the compressor which only has an input and output?

Also, do I have to use single or double ring 1/4 inch jacks?

I would just go from the output of the pre to the input of the compressor, I wouldn't use the insert. To use the insert you need a "stereo y cable."

Heres one from Zzounds.

Why should we buy postage stamps? We can make our own.

I have two stereo y's. I have doubts that they are actually working. Would it be more likely to work going in and out? Do I use single or stereo ring 1/4"?

To use it as an insert, you'll need a 1/4" TRS (tip-ring-sleeve) jack. If I were you I'd just run it from the output of the pre to the input of the compressor.

Would you suggest a TRS cable?

Yeah, a TRS cable with one stereo jack on one end and two mono jacks on the other end. That's the way you run it as an insert, but if you're gonna have it in-line all the time why not just connect it in-line without messing about with TRS connections and such?

Dur, exactly. You're right. I finally did that an hour ago. Talk about making something harder than it had to be.

(btw- Pullover said this in the first place. I zeroed in on the y-cable instead.)

Hehe, don't worry about it! Inserts are handy if you need to chop-and-change connections with a minimum of fuss - I'm a front-of-house engineer and I use TRS cables for all my rack compressors/gates etc. as it makes life a lot easier with differing band setups and stuff, and I can assign different compressors or gates to whichever channel I need it on by connecting only one cable.
