Vintage Home Demo Recording Pics (circa 1996!)
I wasn't sure where to post this... but I found some fun old photos of when a friend and I recorded an EP of our "band" way back in 1996.
We had crappy gear, our songs were not great and the space we had to record in was my Dad's lounge with all the furniture pushed to one side... but the whole thing was recorded by another friend who was experienced in mixing movie soundtracks. I wouldn't subject you all to listening to it - the resulting EP is pretty garbage, but the whole process was a lot of fun.
We used a tape 4 track and bounced a few mixes down to accommodate overdubs, then recorded the stereo mix with a soundcard onto a computer. The result was pretty muddy, but the recording quality was better than most home done band demos at the time...
Drum Machine (Yamaha RY-30, my band mate still has it), Korg effects processor, 4 Track and computers:
The only decent equipment in this lot is the Fender HM Strat and the Ibanez bass (Both of which my band mate still has)
Playing a live take to tape (I'm on bass)

That’s great. I still have my cassette 4 track.

If I was a byrd, I'd be mighty sore every time they shut the door and I don't think I'd sing...

Ha, these are great! Wish I still had some recordings my band did back then (I was 16 in 96). Sadly neither myself nor the other band members have any of the recordings.

Love it! I only tried recording with some friends a couple times, but even though the songs AND the recordings were garbage, it was a lot of fun. Man, I do miss those days sometimes

That’s awesome! Thanks for posting those.
I never did that, nobody I knew had anything like that when I was young (‘80s). When I did record, it was always in studios, although sometimes at practices the singer would use a boom box to record us. Those always sounded like ass, like it was placed right next to the guitarist’s amp, and the rest of us might happen to bleed in from time to time. It did not tolerate bass very well, either.
The first time I actually recorded on a home track machine (about 15 years ago or so), it was a pretty nice digital one, already a few years old. It was capable of some cool shit for a little box, tho, it has its own effects, and the only limits to tracks or songs were its hard drive memory.
I kind of wish I’d learned more on those in the past, I’d probably have a better concept of all of the functions and controls in the DAWs now.

Ha!... Yeah, I have a bunch of tapes recorded the same way (from earlier than when the pics above were taken, when we were an even worse band!). They are basically unlistenable.somanytoys wrote: ↑Fri Sep 20, 2019 11:39 am...sometimes at practices the singer would use a boom box to record us. Those always sounded like ass...

Yeah, it barely even did a good job capturing the new ideas that we came up with (which is mainly why we would do it), let alone be listenable.
Although, he would slide it in the room behind me (usually without me knowing) while I was playing acoustic, and that always came out really well.
We actually wrote a song from him doing that, using different parts that I played over about half an hour that he recorded. After he listened back to it, he brought it to me, and would play one specific part back at a time, and I’d have to figure out wtf I had done. It turned out to be a really good song. He had a good ear for arrangements.
