I have learned everything I know about recording from Moses and this book!

Personally, I’d like to avoid the bouncing.
I meant bouncing down as in, mixing

Another thing I'd suggest is not being afraid of hard panning. Drums to the left, guitar to the right, bit of bleed in the middle is a pretty strong statement, and will up the amount of filthiness you can get away with before things turn to mush.

Actually, simply going from the stereo out of a (power)mixer can also sound good - and gives you more than four tracks, because you’re recording it with a live mixdown.
yeah i did this with a lot of stuff on a digi 8 track, it has the lo fi sound but you get clarity at the same time. That's about as lo-fi as i would want to put out on vinyl
I used to be cool, now I just complain about prices.

You are TOTALLY speaking my language! Personally I've got a bunch of 4-track cassettes that are lo-fi but not on purpose haha!

Off the top of my head my favorites are Brentwoods, Vulcaneers, Traditional Fools, Trashwomen, Mummies, (only old) Donnas, Rip Offs, and of course they who set the standard: Supercharger! Guitar Wolf gets a mention but I don’t love their songs nearly as much as their sound.

I don’t know how they did it, but it sounds like one or two super cheap mics placed very carefully. And then the band must play crazy loud. Radio Shack mics come to mind, and definitely a tape recorder, nothing digital. I’d say use a cassette recorder with two mono mics and mess with placement until the mix is good.

Check out the Mummies on SF Public Access in ‘91, they sound exactly the same!

Thanks for that!
I Fucking love them!

i ran those seaparately with a much nicer mic but through the same mixer with a chap preamp into the digi 8 track, mixed down with all the other parts. I did the drums on 4 tracks with the spine guitar which i mixed down two tracks and panned them a bit, it was a cool product at the end though thinner than i wanted very basement but cool sounding
I used to be cool, now I just complain about prices.

I admit it: I’m a cheapskate.
And I don’t have the money, endurance or will power to make a semi professional recording.
So I’m looking for an excuse to put a Lo-Fi recording on vinyl.
Tell me about your experiences. The equipment you used and your motivation.
Did I say I play in a garage punk band?
You definitely do not need an excuse to do this. But if you need an excuse, I will be your excuse: you should do it.

You said you play in a "garage punk band." I can't think of a better aesthetic to just make your music however you can manage to, and then get someone to bang it on a 7" at a really hot level, as cheaply as possible.

Do it fast, do it cheap, but do it! As much as I'm fascinated by process and love discussing process... I think to do so in this case could be a mistake. Get it done in whatever mercenary fashion allows you to have it complete in a time frame as close to "right this second" and a budget as close to "zero dollars" as possible.

Nice tread and question.

I also agree with this thing with Guitar Wolf. I like the energy of their sound more than their songs.

Me and my band "The Kilaueas!" are playing and recording together since Oct. 1998.
On Dec. 12th we played our first gig in a small record store. I recorded it with my cheap cassette recorder.
Two songs we released yet. You can hear something here:
https://kilaueas.bandcamp.com/track/out-of-limits

This song and "Lonely bullshit" were recorded in the record store.

The other songs on this release are also by cassette recorder or line mix at a gig.
The song "Green shadows" was our first try to record in our rehearsal room with mics and 4tape or something.
https://kilaueas.bandcamp.com/album/the ... on-of-surf

For me the raw cassette recorder songs are the best :)

Meanwhile we have different experiences with studios and people who can not work good with their equipment in their own studios...
I love and I hate recording in the same way.
I also think about getting more Lo-Fi again.
It starts... when it begins.

Thank you for all the inspiring comments so far!
I decided to bring my 4 track cassette recorder to the rehearsal room again and record everything we play, because we have a good vibe going.
The only question that remains: the vocals.
If I record them afterwards, I would have to play without singing, thereby taking out a bit of the vibe.
But how would I put them on the recording while singing? Going out of the mixer and into the recorder?
Or simply micing the PA speaker?

Ok, got it: I will go out of the line out of my active speaker and into the 4-track. Can’t wait to get that sound on tape!!’
