What program are you using them with? I've used ezdrummer in the past, but to be honest I don't like it. I've never tried superior drummer.

Also, how would you rate the quality of the Toontrack drum performances? A big part of why I don't like ezdrummer is that none of the grooves that it comes with actually appeal to me.

Have you seen their MIDI packs?

Yes, you can get MIDI grooves from many sources, and you can use many programs to trigger samples, but if you like the EZDrummer GUI/user experience and want to stay in that kind of simplified ecosystem, they offer quite a variety of MIDI packs to facilitate that.

Yeah, I have seen them. I wonder how good they actually are, just because the stuff that comes with EZdrummer (which I don't really like in terms of workflow, either) is pretty meh like I said. I'm most interested in their AOR expansions. I ended up finding those after looking for various MIDI files that I could poach Purdie/Porcaro/Gadd performances from and rearrange. I haven't really had any luck there. But I did find OddGrooves, who make just awesome drum MIDI, that's compatible with everything out there. I guess there's some way to reformat the toontrack stuff so that other programs like Slate Drums can use them, but it looks tedious.

I think the work flow is good. I usually use the EZ Drummer offline to audition the drum sounds I want, then build the pattern. There are some good midi packs available from 3rd party vendors. Try Groove Monkey, they have ton of different styles and the performances are good. I like the EZ Drummer performances...you can tweak them a bit, and change the drums around. You can also set up the drums to they go to individual channels in your DAW...I'm using Studio One, and I spend less time messing with tech stuff and more time recording. I don't want to spend time playing drums on a keyboard to record something. I would recommend the Groove Monkey stuff...works perfectly with EZ Drummer....the grunge pack is great.

Studio one is great. Really, it's got the best workflow for a recording DAW imo. EZdrummer... well, the main issue I have with it is basically that there could be some optimization done in the pattern selection department. It's just kind of a slog going through them one after the other, and by the time you've auditioned a few fills, you (well, I) have to go back and reorient my ears with the pattern that the fill is supposed to follow. Also it's kinda visually cluttered for my taste, but the sound is certainly there. That you can expand the sounds is great, I wish MT power kit 2 had that. It's a good program, but the drums are way too compressed. I've only just come to realize that superior drummer 3 does the audio to MIDI thing. Oh, man. What a great feature.

I've poked around a bit at groove monkey, they seem pretty good.

I just got a couple of MIDI packs from Oddgrooves. Their AOR and 4/4 packs.

Right after thanksgiving is such a great time to buy stuff like this, right now everything's half off or more.

Juuuuuust in case anyone else is in the market for anything like that...
