Closed back headphone recommendations?
Looking for something to use as monitors while tracking live drums or amped guitars in the same room. I want to be able to block enough of the source to hear how mic placement affects the sound & listen for any clipping. The usual routine is to set up mics, record & review. If time is an issue (or we're just lazy) we record visually by keeping things out of the red.
Willing to spend up to $250 (maybe $300 if there's a big difference in quality). I currently use Vic Firth drummer headphones, but it's old & beat up.
A plus would be if they are neutral sounding to hear if anything screwy sticks out when mixing.

You could try the Ultraphones: https://www.gk-music.com/product/ultraphones/
They're the classic Sony MDR-7506 mounted in big isolation ear muffs. Haven't used them myself but they seem to fit the bill.

Thanks. Never heard of them, but the reviews are good & one addressed my needs.

Dang! That's a competing version of the Remote Audio HN-7506 cans. Same thing - the 7506 drivers in a helicopter headphones rig. I use them for my job recording dialog, and also while playing drums and doing headphones mixing stuff. They have two versions, with or without the mic.Dok wrote: ↑Sun Apr 02, 2023 9:20 pmYou could try the Ultraphones: https://www.gk-music.com/product/ultraphones/

That may be the best you can do.
But in some ways "total isolation" is incompatible with "neutral sounding."
Sticking a driver in a small, rigid, inflexible can has side effects that are not easily overcome (which is why most of the priciest headphones are open-back)

Of course. I have had to train my ears to interpret that closed sound, which has worked way better than I thought. I would love to hear some open back cans at some point. The main gain of this kind of headset is isolation. If you don't need isolation, definitely go for open back Ultrasones or something.

I'll order the GK headphones this evening unless someone pipes in with another contender.

I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

I’ve used earbuds under shooting-style earmuffs, but the combo I have gets uncomfortable after a while.

I’ve just been using cheap Apple ones from when they were still 3.5mm. The shooters press up against them and hurt my ears after a while. Roomier ones would solve that.
I have some of those Vic Firth things and they sound like shit and there’s a lot of click bleed when drumming.

Re: Closed back headphone recommendations?
The newer vic firth iso headphones (the ones with the faux-carbon fiber weave finish) are quite a bit nicer than the previous ones. I wouldn't want to mix on them or anything, but they do a good job of isolation/volume reduction.

Re: Closed back headphone recommendations?
update: the GK headphones worked out well. Not total isolation, but when there's music coming through it's definitely enough to mask any surrounding music/noise. Audio quality is much better than my 90's Vic Firth headphones.
