The 2007 RPM Challenge: record an album in 28 days, just because you can.

The 2007 RPM Challenge

This is the challenge: record an album in 28 days, just because you can.
That’s 10 songs or 35 minutes of original material recorded during the month of February. Go ahead… put it to tape.

It’s a little like National Novel Writing Month, (NaNoWriMo.org) where writers challenge each other to write 1,700 words a day for 30 days, or the great folks over at February Album Writing Month ( http://fawm.org ), who encourage artists to write 14 new songs in February. Maybe they don’t have “Grapes of Wrath” or “Abbey Road” at the end of the month, or maybe they do—but that’s not the point. The point is they get busy and stop waiting around for the muse to appear. Get the gears moving. Do something. You can’t write 1,700 words a day and not get better.
I'm gonna sign up!  Who's with me?!?!

Sounds great, except I'm away for the first three weeks of Feb, so I'd be labouring under a severe handicap!

OK- I'm in!  My profile at RPM Challenge

Here's my goofy description:
My new album will be a desperate mash-up, drawing on an aquifer of domestic dramas and polished by a popt sense of songcraft, all existing in a place where Tom Verlaine sits in with Lou Reed and John Leckie twiddles knobs on an ancient Moog Modular while Robert Quine sings lines from Miles' "On The Corner" LP. Trippy, but with a populist touch. Songs of the gutter that look to the stars.
There were requests from the peanut gallery to include "aquifer" and "populist touch," so I did just that.

Mile's "On The Corner" ----- What an album! Subversive as all heck in the jazz world. What's cooler than a trumpet with a wah wah pedal?
_________

I suspect some folks out there would already have a lot of songs at the ready - would that be cheating? And how could they tell?

Yeah, it's a fantastic album!  Waaaay out there for its time.

You know, if people want to cheat, then really, they're just cheating themselves, as there are no prizes, no first place, no judges- the work is its own reward.

After further reading thru the site, I think the idea is way cool.

I'm used to doing 'one-shot' improvs. (recording direct to CD - with no option of remixing, etc.) and doing things quickly.

I'd love to do this, but I'm already due to do about 24 hours a week in the studio working on my uni final projects...

is that a digi 002 you're using, lalaland?
