JM > MAudio interface > Logic 7 (Pro and Express) on Mac OSX.

The built-in guitar amp sims, effects, compressors, EQ and reverbs offer enough to get a huge palette of sounds.

Also sometimes use a POD XT - again, with a bit of time and imagination the range of sounds is almost endless, but in particular I've used the JC120, Bassman and Twin Reverb models for great clean tones.

i second the akg c414, its a great mic for the price.  also look out for the old c414EB models from the 80s.  the only issue i've ever found with them is they were probably built as brite as they could be because everybody was recording to cheap analog decks back then.  now when you use them with a digital system they tend to need significant amounts of "dulling down" before they hit the disk or everything comes out hypercrispy.  i'm using one with an old calrec pre that brent averill racked mainly because of the eq.  its a great guitar chain, but i'd love to get an old ribbon.  anyone here into the stc/coles?

the other thing i recently discovered is this new line6 audio interface/plugin called gearbox.  i can see why most tone freaks on this site will  :k but its really quick if you're looking for a large amount of tones really fast. (i make commercial music for a living so i've got to move REALLY fast)

its really hilarious, you can type in AC/DC and it asks you which song you want the tone off of!!?

i have it running into two neve vintage 1272s (which is probably sacralidge i'm sure) straight into a motu828mk2 and i rarely have to hook up a mic and cab anymore.  which i'm sure is sad for all of you "tonefreaks" but it saves me HOURS of work!  and lets me spend that time posing in the mirror with my offsets!

I have a guitarport with gearbox installed, and it's great. I used to run the guitarport software with it, but gearbox is a lot better IMHO. I can get just about any sound I want out of it, and the results are pretty convincing. If it was in a mix I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference really, and some of the simulations are great.

i had a guy ask "hey can you get that U2 sound on the guitar for this song?"

and i loaded up EVERY SOUND the edge ever used!

technology is so great and terrifying at the same time...

now if they just added kevin shields to the list of guitarists, THEN i'd be impressed!

I've been working on it for a while, but there's no reverse reverb so you can't really do it... :D

Ii have to say I think the modern AKG414 is an awful mic for recording electric guitar, far too bright with a horrible un-natural top end..but if you were to find a vintage late 70's 414EB with the orignal CK12 brass capsule(beware though just cos it's an EB doesn't mean it has the brass capsule)..then you have an amazing mic with a beautiful smooth silky top end  :D and you probably wouldn't pay much more for an EB that a new 414..

I'd have to disagree with you there Eggwheat - the 414's become my favourite mic for when I'm recording my own guitar - it's nice and clear, and sounds good to me :)

I'd like to try it some time, but unfortunately I'm back to SM57 land at the end of the month, as I'm finishing university and won't have access to their nice equipment anymore!

hehe, I'm doing Music Technology in Belfast. We're using a Pro Tools HD2 system with loads of nice AKG, Neumann, Blue, Sennheiser and Rode mics, with the full Waves Gold plugin set, TC rack reverb units and 2 Focusrite ISA 220 preamps.

We also have some pretty astounding live rooms.

It's pretty cool :)

I'm tempted to buy an SM57 but I've never recorded something with a mic like that.. will it handle my almost cranked HD deluxe?is it a good choice?

go for it, it's the standard for micing at live gigs pretty much, and I almost always use one on guitar amps.

i usually mic my vibroverb amp with an sm58, because i like my tone through my amp, and dont exactly love it when DIing...although ill do that for certain situations (recording late at night for example)
sometimes ill set up my at4040 somewhere in the room as well to get more of a presence. :)
