Does anyone own a DIGI 003?

Post by OffYourFace » Tue Jan 15, 2008 5:12 pm

I'm thinking of getting one (rack version) this weekend but I'd like to hear some opinions about them.  I just sold a Les Paul and I'm sick of using my ver.1 MBox.

thanks!  -Mike

For sure.. I did the trade in upgrade path..
Sent in my 001 and got $1000 off the Rack Factory with Music Production bundle..

For some reason when I tried hooking it up.. with 7.3 software.. The Firewire wasnt being detected..

So I brought it to work and a PC geek buddy of mine fixereedd it.. yet, it would get all kinds of errors
and drop out.. saying the buffer underrun to the hardware.. With the purchase of the unit came a free upgraqde to 7.4.
So I installed it.. and again I lost connectivity with the firewire.. buddy at work fixered it again.. and now (with a firmware update that
came with 7.4) He says its working nicely.. The MOBO I have, he thinks was too new for the firmware that came with 7.3
I havent had a chance to hook it up at home since he fixored it though.. hopfully tonight I can set it up and install the extra's that came with it..
Then get some really playing in over the weekend..

(I use PT because I am very very fast and comfortable with it.. been using it professionallyt for the past 7 years.. starting with 5.1 on a Mix Plus system..
owned the 001, and now 003.. and have used both LE (Digi002) and full HD systems with updates now at 7.4... WAVES plugs are standard on all our work machines.. wish I could afford me for home.. and im not interested in cracks.. yet.. hahaha

waves are great.. but i've always found the renaissance compressors
the most valuable of the bundle, so I bought the iLok codes for just
those renaissance plugs.. I also like these for free.

Yep I know sometimes digidesign can be a bitch!  and their customer service
is kinda shit.. I mean, better than APPLE, but not great.  lol.  I love PT 7.4 though

7.4 is amazing..

At work we just get the guys from the store to fix everything,
or deal directly with digi.. we get advanced releases and shit, but
weve been using PT since version 1 and give em a lot o business...

With Waves I liek the L2 Limiter..
I might actually go for it...
very transpartent brickwall limiting

The other plug I might need is a Q10.. For surgical EQ it is pretty hot
Digi;s new EQ is pretty tight now, so I stick with that for most things..

I will check out those plugs u linked.. I can always use more

After doing some research I think I might back out of getting the 003.  I think I'm gonna go for the Apogee Ensemble and use Logic Pro.  My computer is a new-ish iMac so it makes sense.

I have some cool pres (2x Chandler TG Channel) that I want to use and the apogee converters are better... that's what I hear.

I'm not too skilled in the digital studio realm.  It seems like it was just last year that I was using my old Tascam MS-16  ;D  Well, it was only 2 years ago now that I think about it...

the Apogee with Logic is a very good system, but it really depends on how you like to work...that being said, although I like ProTools, I wish they'd rename the ProTools LE version...it implies that you're working with ProTools when most of what sets ProTools apart from other DAWs is severely limited in LE. While Logic and Apogee may not be superior to ProTools HD, it's head and shoulders above the LE system...especially using those TG channels...I can't seem to save up the $$$ to get a pair for myself  :'(

superfuzz, are you referring to the DSP processing power of HD Accell chips?
or the actual quality of the AD/DA convertors of their 192 interfaces that sets pt apart from others?
PS.. apogee makes better convertors than stock digidesign IMO.  not sure about ensemble's hardware
though, but from the rossetta to the ADX 16 systems with soft clipping is really nice.. btw still not even
the best AD/DA's on the market either..  so why not just use in conjunction with PT LE using digital sync
or low jitter word-clock?  It's cheaper and better sounding if you don't ever need to record at 192 khz.
i use 44.1 mostly anyway, but 88.2 is the highest i'd use for a session anyway, so i wouldn't need the
HD system for the most part.

well, the DSP power has been an advantage, but it probably won't be for much longer. I was referring more to the features in ProTools HD that are crippled in LE that make working with HD a joy and make working with LE a pain in the ass. Not that there aren't work arounds, but there are plenty of other native software DAWs that don't require you to nudge, nudge nudge, or pony up more $ for a few extra tracks, or make you want to bypass all the stock converters and preamps because they don't measure up. Digi markets LE as a path for learning ProTools and for recording "demos." They don't market it as a pro solution, that's HD, so it will never have those essential features that you need to record and mix  a full band.

Back when I was at university I used to record using the HD rig, then do editing and rough mixing on the Mboxes with LE (There was only one HD studio between 30 students, so we didn't have enough time to do everything on the HD rig) then go back to HD for final mixing etc. I never encountered any problems with it, and didn't really feel limited when using LE in comparison.
