What is this instrument? "Cure" content
Letter to Elise unplugged never gets old. I've watched this a few times, but the sound has got me wondering. In approximately a minute into it, the guy is playing what looks like a toy piano, and it probably is. But does anyone know exactly what it is or something at least similar to?

Horribly out of tune, but it's essentially a children's toy piano, like you said. A Glockenspiel-like instrument operated via keys rather than hand-held mallets.

Yes, out of tune for sure. But, for me that's what is good about it. I looked on the web prior to posting, but didn't really see one similar to that size. That size would be ideal.StevenO wrote:Horribly out of tune, but it's essentially a children's toy piano, like you said. Was hoping on the off chance that someone may recognize it or know one that was very close.

This may not be of assistance if you need one for live use, but if you're a KONTAKT user you might be interested in Sonic Couture's virtual version with extended scale, which is free when you by some of their other stuff. Toy pianos being a chordophones with manual setting of the "tine" length there is a degree of out-of-tune character that comes with the package (some online sources show tuning methods if you're willing to take actual toy pianos apart), but the SC version is mostly tuned up to at least sit in a mix without causing problems. I've used the SC version for years now on all kinds of commercial work and it sounds great with a full 8 layers of velocity to work with for fantastic dynamic control that affects timbre: http://www.soniccouture.com/en/products" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... toy-piano/

My ex had a toy piano that size. It was made by schoenhut.
What is acoustic? Oh, you means a grandpa's guitars? A grandpa's guitars? That's for pussies and grandpas. I think you know it.

every time i watch that i think "how in the world are their legs not falling asleep?"
If I was a byrd, I'd be mighty sore every time they shut the door and I don't think I'd sing...

I remember those being at every daycare center I went to as a kid. Seemed to be like a 60's-70's hand-me-down-80's thrift shoppy toy thing.
