sleazy's budget drum kit build.

Post by s_mcsleazy » Tue Oct 08, 2019 9:53 am

so a few months ago, my friend called me up saying they needed a drummer for a few demo's. knowing that i used to play a bit of drums (i started out playing drums on and off since i was 6) and i've got to admit, after a wee warm up on his kit. i got hooked again.

sitting in the back of my mind, i was repairing something for someone locally (it was a solid state marshall) and i noticed he had an old premier kick similar to the one i found in a skip a few years ago..... along with a bunch of drum hardwear. i asked what his price would be. £10. i left it in his studio and plan on picking it up soon.

a few days later, i was wandering around the junk/charity shops like i normally do and came across..... a 90's premier olympic chromed snare drum. 15x5. it was kinda rusty but a few hours with the brasso and £12 later, it was really solid.

fast forward to today. i'm picking up a drum stool my friend has in her attic and found a new second hand shop opened near her work. decided to pop in and what do i see? a fuck tonne of drum hardwear, some old shells and some cymbals. after 20 mins of picking through all the stuff there. i came away with.

70's premier snare stand
precussion plus hihats (i liked them because they sounded kinda trashy in a good way)
70's premier kick pedal
80's premier hihat stand (fully working)
zildjian 18 crash
and a few small parts all for £45.

he mentioned he has more drum stuff so i'm going to check on that tomorrow.

i'll post pictures when the kit is done.

A drum kit for £67 and a little elbow grease?!? That's fantastic! I don't play drums as I have rhythm until the second I sit down behind a kit, but I still want a kit for a music room so someone else can bang around on one.

still a few small things to get but for the most part. i think i can finish it for under £85.

it's mainly going to be used for recording demo's with my friend or as a writing tool. but hey, maybe i'll feel up to gigging behind the kit one day.

update. went back for the floor tom. ya ever get that situation in yer head where yer like half joking "oh maybe it will be a premier to match the rest of the kit. hell, maybe it will even be in black or white" well we have a black premier floor tom. 16x15. heads in good shape for £5. just needs a wee cleaning up. also got a decent cymbal stand thrown in.

Sean, with the luck you keep having finding kit pieces really inexpensively, you're gonna be able to fill out a Neil Peart-sized set for under $150 in the next 2 weeks :D 8) That's friggin' badass man!

I pity your neighbours. Or do you have a studio for the kit to live in? Also, where is this amazing junk shop??? ;)

Sounds like this is building up to a great little kit!
What are the odds of finding great drum gear in all the little 2nd hand stores around you; let alone matching Premier stuff aswell!
Great score!
Curious to see some pictures.

I'd love to own a kit one day, but I'm like Shadoweclipse; I couldn't play the drums even if my life depended on it! ::)

i'm leaving it in my friend's home studio. i'm just building it here in maryhill.

as for the junk shop, do ya know where otago lane tea house is? it opened next door. they dont have a lot of music stuff but i know you and yer family know quite a bit about furniture and they have a lot of mid century stuff there..... they also had the same coombes tape recorder my school used to use.

there was a lot of stuff i actually left behind tbh. there was enough drum stuff left for them to build a kit and still have some spares.

not pictured is the cymbel stand, the zildjian cymbel and a few nicknacks

what is pictured, me needing to hoover.

the kick drum is an older premier. i'm guessing from the logo, late 70's to mid 80's. it's super shallow but also quite big. it's actually closer to marching band width. it needs the legs, a new claw and heads. i was going to change the heads anyway since i tend to like the big thick ones.

That looks great! I love the black and white motif going on.

Ha! I used to live right on the corner of Otago St. and Otago Lane. So, obviously, I know the area. Might check it out some lunchtime (if only for the furniture).

And we're supposed to believe you're NOT annoying the neighbours? Just be careful that adding to a drum kit into that mix doesn't push one of them over the edge!

honestly. i've not been playing them. i like the flat i'm in and while my downstairs neighbors are insane noisy dickbacks, i love the other neighbors in my block. the couple across from me are lovely and i wouldn't dare piss them off.
