At least I think it'll come today. Anyone want to guess what the hell I'm talking about?

Great guess! It’s an older instrument than that.

Some kind of New Bass Synth Day?

Moog Subphatty?

Deep down I hope it's an old Rheem Kee Bass

Sometimes, when I do these posts, I end up getting inspired by a lot of the things people suggest. That's a cool bass synth.

But no, this is a chordophone.

Whew! I had the feeling you might just come in and guess immediately on this one.

It is an acoustic instrument.

Another great idea! But you actually had it right above, I was referring to the bağlama saz, which I have one arriving tomorrow courtesy of your old friends the Sandis:

It will look something like this:

And for anyone who doesn't know, it sounds like this in the hand of an accomplished player (that is, not me):

Although immediately upon opening the box I will be among the top five bağlama players in the St. Louis metropolitan area, so there's that.

Although maybe not, while we were at the library my wife got some messages from one of my Pickleball friends Bob, who apparently was at the park and talking to a Persian gentleman who is also a guitarist, and Bob was trying to remember the name of the weird new instrument I was expecting, and they were guessing maybe I had an oud on the way, which I also will get one of some day. But maybe this guy is the best bağlama player in the St. Louis metropolitan area, maybe he has actually played one before.

There's actually an oud for sale at the music store across the street, I wonder if it's any good. If I didn't have some faith in the Sandis at this point, I might not have made a move, it's hard to know if you are buying a real instrument or tourist junk. Not sure how to evaluate this oud.

Amazing. I got strong "saz" vibes when you suggested I might get it quickly, but struggled with the "B" part!

Then I pivoted to Mexico, for some reason. Mostly because I finally had a good B to go with that S!

I'm glad you've finally gotten a Sandi! I wonder if their prices have gone down, or up. Turkey is suffering from some truly hideous inflation at the moment, so I'm glad they got paid in USD for this one, at least.

They came off 1/7th of the price, I can say that.

For anyone who is curious who we are talking about, the Sandi family is instrument makers in Turkey, seem to be mainly in Ankara or at least that's where this order shipped from. They can be found here.

I'd wanted a saz for years, and in my searches to find instruments of professional grade quality I came across the Sandi family, but didn't order anything until recently. However, Mike did some dealing with them, and they turned out a very good archlute for the money, and while it wasn't perfect it was also probably the only one they made that year.

So I felt that their bread and butter products would probably be safe.

I'm not entirely sure what I'll do with it other than learn to play it and enjoy. The saz is not set up in equal temperament, or at least I would not imagine, so I'm not really sure I could add it easily to acoustic guitar songs like I could the banjo and such. Honestly I have no idea what to expect there. Maybe I can.

The frets are not metal, but movable nylon, so I could put it in equal temperament if I wanted to, except I have nowhere near the mathematical skill or knowledge to do that.

I'm sure I'll have fun with it. Logic Pro can be set to use other temperaments, if I feel like setting the synths in that otherwise. This will be new to me.
