who makes good, cheap drum hardware these days?

so my goal is to get a kit going to practice with, initially, with an eye towards recording, down the road. The used market in hong kong is pretty minimal. I found one off-brand set for pretty cheap but i'm tempted to just buy a new, entry-level kit, replace the bass pedal first, then whatever drums & cymbals need replacing when i have more money.

So if i wind up stuck with a new kit, what's the cheapest i can get with quality hardware? I can get Mapex, Taye, Ludwig, Tama, Pearl, Yamaha, and i think that's it. I'm prob forgetting some off-brands, and we have some dw and gretsch - but they only stock the most expensive of these types. So.. can i expect to get quality hardware on any of these?

If you can get DW check out the 6000 series hardware, it's their entry level hardware put is pretty durable, and has kind of a cool vintage look. Also Tama makes some good stuff, I've used their RoadPro series which is great but more high end, I'm sure their entry level stuff would be decent.

hey thanks for the post; i'll check out some rockstars and superstars tomorrow. When i think about it, i think my question is difficult - anyone experienced doesn't often play bottom-rung kits, and people with these kits don't have a good experiential basis for comparison. What i really need is a drum salesman less snobby than the ones at the local near-monopoly music chain!

I'll 2nd that...DW bass pedal and the Tama roadpro hardware...it's what I use.

I also really like the DW 6000 series. Big fan of the old skool flat based look. I've had great luck with Gibraltar hardware as well... pretty solid stuff and can take a lot of abuse and they're easy to find replacement parts for if things break.

thanks a lot for the replies. I recently bought an old Pearl Export series for about $200 usd. Great score, considering the few sets available. It also came with some tama cymbal hardware and a pretty comfortable throne, so i'm just looking forward to having the cash to replace the ride and crash, and get an iron cobra double pedal.
