Drums!

Post by BenHagerty » Tue Apr 21, 2009 5:24 pm

I have been so bored with guitar lately, and have alwaysssss wanted to play drums (since I was about 5 or so)

What should I look for in terms of gear? What should I get for a standard set up etc? What should I know about each drum and cymbal?

How much are you willing to spend?

No matter, look used. Used drums are dirt cheap, cymbals too.

You can skimp on the drums and get a used set of Pearl Forums, or Ludwig Accents. Decent heads and good tuning can make them sing, but don't cheap out on cymbals. You can't make those sound better.

My friend did that to his Pearl cymbals which came free with his Target kit.
There is no problem so bad that you can't make it worse.

Look for a Gretsch Blackhawk deluxe (Standard blackhawk series = crap, Deluxe = win) or Club kit. Both are fairly cheap, sound great, and look great.

I believe both types come with really sturdy Gibraltar hardware. I have a Blackhawk Deluxe kit in black pearl and love it.

As said above, get some good heads, and tune them up well, and you'll have a good sounding kit.

On the cheap for cymbals, look for Sabian B8's. They sound pretty good as far as budget cymbals go.

Indeed cant stress enough how much difference skin/heads make I used for awhile the stock clear mylar skins i had to dampen the hell out of my bass to get it sounding alright. But yesterday I bought a Remo skin for it and I set it up using the palm press technique and as soon as I kicked it it sounded sweet.

I got a new full set, 5-piece, three cymbals, and hardware for $500 last summer on eBay. They're Ludwig Accents with cheap Zildjian cymbals but they get the job done, I'd recommend trying to find a deal like that.
