NUD! (New ukulele day.)
Jimmy snapped up a uke today that was on clearance at his local music store. It's a very basic, run-of-the-mill affair, a Lanikai LU-II. The best part was the gold "MADE IN CHINA" sticker.
Not bad for a beginner like Jimmy. She's a soprano, though, so Jimmy would have a hard time playing and singing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" as Jimmy is very much a baritone.
I must say that I was/am surprised by her volume. Freakin' loud for such a small instrument.
I must practice like a madman so that I will be able to stun the people of Hawaii.
"Look! There's that long-haired mainlander that kicks all of our asses at the ukulele. Plus, he's drunk."
And they shall come to know me as Jimmy "The Cosby" Lanikiwaui. (I'm going to move over to Pat's drunk thread now...)

Congrats!
Aren't both ADF#B and GCEA soprano tunings? It's funny, that's the first song I wanted to learn to.

I'm not sure, actually. Definitely the GCEA, though.jgs61 wrote: Congrats!

This thing is getting some major playing time, though. And last night, I "figured out" the chords to "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" quite by a drunken accident.
You play the uke, also?

Kind of... not really.
I've got an old Martin tiple that I found recently. It's like a cross between a mandolin and a uke. It's got 10 steel strings, but it looks more like a uke. I've got it tuned ADF#B. I haven't tried any other tunings yet because the strings are ridiculously old and I don't want to mess with them. I'm waiting for some new sets to come in the mail. Prior to this I had a little experience with ukes, but had never played a tiple. I had heard them and really liked the sound. When I found this Martin, the price was right so I got it. It's beat up and needs some work, but it's a cool little instrument.

It's not quite as discolored as it looks. Some of that is the flash.
It's kind of cool how a simple song like "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" sounds so much better on this than it does on a guitar.
Let's see yours too.

Wow! That's impressive. And 18 frets. What's the scale on that thing?jgs61 wrote: It's not quite as discolored as it looks. Some of that is the flash.

13 1/2" with 12 frets. Super tiny. I have reasonably thin fingers, too, and I don't see how some people can form these chords.jgs61 wrote: 17". What's your soprano?
When I get enough cash together, I want to go buy one of the baritone ukes.

That is small! I've been having trouble making chords and I have small, thin fingers also. I can't remember if the ukes I've played were 13.5" or not.

Jimmy may try to sell his current ukulele. He's going to try to save up enough to buy a Fender uke.

Congrats on NUD! I got an old Uke recently, its a fun instrument. Had to learn "Tonight You Belong to Me"... an old 30's song made famous anew in the film "the Jerk"
