Glenn Kotche

Post by El Pr0n » Fri Aug 28, 2009 4:55 pm

I went to see Wilco tonight, and Glenn Kotche was just amazing on the drums. I was expecting an evening of gawking at Mr. Cline, but Jesus, Glenn was equally impressive.

But he had this thing which I had never seen before, and I spent most of the night trying to figure out what the hell it was.

A bit plastic tube, not unlike a talk box tube, except he was blowing into it - he was red in the face a good bit while using it.

Everytime he blew into it, while doing a roll on the floor toms (like a big long tympani-style roll), it seemed that the pitch of the drum was 'bent'. Now maybe this was actually a keyboard sound or something I was confusing with Glenn's drumming, but could the two be related?

If anyone knew what was going on with Glenn's tube, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks!

He's mentioned the tubes before in his old Modern Drummer articles. It's just a piece of plastic tubing going into the vents of his floor toms. They do exactly what you said. By him pushing air into the the toms, he can raise the pitches of them for tympani style rolls.

So I just turned my toms sideways on my lap and put my mouth up to the vents - the air inside drums doesn't taste too good :P I have to figure out some sort of tube thing like Glenn...

But as an effect, it's definitely cool. I'm kinda half in a band, if we get serious I'd love to do some sort of multiple percussion thing, I could put down my guitar to play some "tompani" parts ;D

Thanks again Jonesie!

if you want to get tube just go to your local hardware store and see if they have a plumbing section. Clear plastic tubing is less than $1 per foot here in the states.
