I'm in the camp who doesn't see the value in a primitive playback sample engine at that price...but I do love the mellotron samples in my Nord keyboard.

Likewise... love the Mk1 and Mk2 samples, so wibbly and lovely - the later mellotron samples just lack a little depth for me. Have youu tried any of the the Chamberlin samples yet?glimmertwin wrote:I'm in the camp who doesn't see the value in a primitive playback sample engine at that price...but I do love the mellotron samples in my Nord keyboard.

Re: Mellotron
A friend of mine has a mellotronish thing in his house. I dont know too much about them so I cant really give to many details on it though Im pretty sure it has just been passed down through his family and now resides in his bedroom. Its very old and great to mess about on from time to time. Id love for him to move it into a studio or something though I get the vibe that its treated more like a piece of furniture than an instrument. Regardless its very cool.

Re: Mellotron
The studio my band did their first album in had one, it's so cool. Once I heard it I immediately realized how many times I'd heard it before. Zeppelin's The Rain Song, RHCP's Breaking The Girl, some Smashing Pumpkins stuff, lots and lots of recordings. It has that amazing lo-fi sound for strings, voices, and flute sound. Really high maintenance and really expensive though apparently.

I work at a University Music School and around the middle of last year I found one tucked away in a corner between a Steinway and a pianoforte needing fairly serious repairs. Unfortunately they will neither sell it to me or find money (and someone in Australia) to repair it.

I dig it, but not enough to invest in one.

Re: Mellotron
Yes indeed, the latest Nord samples are a cost effective substitute for a pricey mellotron. Like any other killer vintage gear, there was a time when a 'tron could be purchased for dirt cheap.

Re: Mellotron
I'll second that. The G-Force Mtron, and now the Mtron Pro, sound great. I love the strings!
I'm big on real instruments over samples most of the time, and I've played a real Mellotron, but I have to say that the G-Force version is very satisfying, and pretty reasonably prices, too. Actually, I've found some use for their Virtual String Machine, too.

Unfortunately my 'studio' is on the second floor in the attic of our house, so I would be very reluctant to get that up the stairs, even if it would fit! Also, I can't afford one.
The M-Tron is very good (and the Pro version is brilliant value for money) and there are very few pieces of music that I have recorded that don't feature a 'Mellotron' somewhere in the mix.
Just for anyone who wants to get an idea of the sound without laying out any lolly, there are a few freebies out there. A couple of good ones:
Redtron 400 is worth looking at. There is a download at the bottom of the article.
Meltron MkX is similar.

Re: Mellotron
I've always loved the Mellotron, but there's no way that I'll ever be able to own one. The girl in that first video you posted is really cute/sexy btw.
