One In, One Out. The hardest choices...

Post by JSett » Tue Feb 07, 2023 2:11 pm

As you all probably saw, I got my hands on a 72 JM yesterday. I can already tell it's a good one.

But I have a self-imposed one-in, one-out rule at the moment. Which leaves me with the decision... Which one must go?

64 Jaguar in refin LPB
67 Coronado in OG LPB
72 Jazzmaster in OG Sunburst

Image

The Jaguar is most practical between that and the Coronado. But the Coronado is such an oddity it's allure is still there. I'm also drifting back away from shortscales. I've been playing JMs as my #1 for so goddamn long now they feel totally natural to move around on.

Or do I just keep them all? The money I used to snag the JM was supposed to pay for our kitchen to be fitted end of March :D theoretically I could replace that money relatively quickly if business stays busy.

If you had to sacrifice one, which would it be?
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

Whichever one inspires the least joy when played. Nothing else really matters. I've tortured myself in the past with debates over which guitar would be harder to replace, or seemed like a better pairing "on paper," but all of that is sort of beside the point.

If someone came to you and said, "You've got to go a week only playing X guitar," which one would you be disappointed for it to be?

I'd sacrifice the Jag, for all the reasons you've already covered in the original post.

If they were mine I'd probably let the Jag go as I'd need to have a JM and the Coronado is just cool, but for you if you want to be able to play them all at loud stage volume then probably the Coronado if it doesnt really work for that. But its tough as thats probably the coolest of the lot.

However fuck the rules, keep them all

The dumb rule.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

I might be looking at this all wrong, but isn't there something else you can get rid of and keep these?

All three. Get yourself a few Squier Baritone JMs ― MUCH better investment. That'll pay for the new kitchen in no time.

I’d toss rule out just this once and keep all three!! How could you do otherwise? Lol

How about putting the Jazzmasters up against each other in a duel to the death? The CIJ JM66B and the 72? I know the CIJ is your #1, but hey.

I'd probably ditch the Jaguar just because the Coronado is so sweet.

We're still doing that, right?

I agree that it's a weird rule. I think I understand the intent, but to have to choose between those three is a bit out of the ordinary. Easy choice for me though, because I despise hollow bodies ha ha!

I mean, I get it. Time/space/budget constraints can all be great reasons to have a one in, one out policy. Sometimes artificial constraints like that can also keep you from letting a guitar collection get out of hand. I'll admit that, if it wasn't for coated strings, I'd be going out of my mind just keeping up with the string changes on all my guitars. Sometimes that type of thing can get in the way of actual guitar playing, you know?

I'm in a "one in, one out" phase - for the last year or two, I've worked really hard to sell more guitars than I bring in through trades or purchases, and it's felt amazing. I have a few more instruments to go, but once I reach my target number, I want to keep it from inflating again. Not to go all Marie Kondo about it, but reducing clutter and only keeping guitars that truly spark joy is something that I'm really enjoying.

That's why my answer was to get rid of the one that is the least fun to play. That's my only criterion these days. If it's easy to put a guitar down, it's easy to sell, too. If I can't put the thing down, it's safe from the chopping block.

I'd be most disappointed if it was the Coronado. It's the least stable for tuning, and the least comfortable to play sitting or standing. And loves to feedback with distortion. It's just so damn nice to look at (and sounds great for clean jangly stuff)

With my #1 CIJ I'll always have a JM, so that's not an issue. The Jag is worth the most monetarily too.

I actually don't have a lot more anymore. My main CIJ JM, my BMM Tele (which I wouldn't be dumb enough to sell twice), an acoustic and a bass. Plus these three.

:D :D :D I'm going to replace them all with Affinity models. It's the only sensible thing to do.

HAH! That CIJ is going to the grave with me. Well, if I die first it's being left in my will to GaryPtaszek, but the sentiment is the same.
Also, the CIJ is barely worth anything these days as it's so fucked with and had many many mods and repairs...wouldn't be worth it.

I used that once to justify buying a 5th Datsun about 15 years ago with my wife.

"You don't need 5 cars"
"You don't need more than 100 pairs of shoes"
"I don't have more than 100 pairs of shoes"
*proceeds to count her shoes. 111 pairs*
"You can't count slippers!"
"I damn well can"
*proceeds to buy 5th Datsun*

I don't actually own any cars at all now, funnily.

I'm leaning towards this option. If financially viable. I'll sell a few pedals and mitigate some of the cost, try and hustle GaryPtaszek to get over and buy the Guild, etc etc.
