There's probably a hippie sandwich of laminated purpleheart and walnut under the green paint.

What happened to all those hippie sandwich guitars? I low key want one but can't really find any on reverb or anywhere else? I see some of the MIJ ones from Ibanez and others but none of the weird 60's and 70's brass bedazzled ones.

The hippie sandwich stuff used to be cheap, usually pretty good quality and plentiful so all the OG guys used them which inspired the next generation of the genre.

I think of the hippie sandwich as an Alembic-like guitar - something with every exotic wood under the sun sandwiched together in every direction.
The green bud is coming back together - it looks like whoever put a ton of work into this thing never actually finished it. There was still grain filler and paint covering the holes for the strings under the bridge, and some of the brass shielding was never soldered together. I needed to make a few pieces out of scrap brass and saw the pickup rings apart and rearrange them so that the pickup springs would hold the rings on the pickguard. Also, it wasn't packed too well, and one of the pickups was knocked apart. Luckily I was able to solder the 4 wires back to the coils. Finally had a project to use some weird round string trees that had been in the parts box for years.

Yep. I believe the term came about from a rash of hippies going through training to work as luthiers and they all seemed to make the same projects - layers of alternating woods (like maple and rosewood) sandwiched together or just every exotic wood they could lay their hands on, lots of brass hardware and a lean towards active electronics. More or less a mild movement towards guitars that looked like they were actually made out of wood after all the rainbow of custom color guitars of the 60's and early 70's.
I personally love the old Kramer DMZ's and would really love a rosewood one with the alum neck but I should've grabbed one when they were $500 all day long . Still have that lefty '81 DMZ bass though.

I wonder if that's an original WRHB - if so, that'd be a pretty good deal after all, too!

Interesting. I've always wondered where Ibanez got the idea for the Musician model, but there it is.
