Somewhere on my computer I've got a folder called 'fucked Hofners', cos I realised so many turn up it's worthy of a Tumblr.

I think they sold so many in the UK/Europe that they got taken for granted, but they are really nice guitars. At any given time there are at least a couple of Verithins with humbuckers routed into the top kicking about... I've seen loads

amazing i need to see these pictures! i have a senator and apparently the glue they used on the neck joint dries out and crumbles on most of them which is what happened to mine

Also the solder they used inside most of their pickups corrodes and eats away at the coil. Pretty much any metal covered Hofner pickup from like, '61- to... 68(?) or so has either been rewound or it's just a matter of time. I've had a V3, Verithin and a single pickup senator and out of those 6 pickups, only one didn't need rewinding .

I guess in the 70s and 80s people were just like... uh the pickups are broken I'll dig some holes in the top and stick shit korean humbuckers on there.

Here are some 'favourites'

These are nice guitars, they don't deserve this! If you put holes in a Hofner semi top for some other type of pickup you've basically ruined it.

My guess is that they tried to thin it down and hit the truss rod cavity :fp:

Sometimes with these mods I feel like letting a toddler with a hammer loose on them would have resulted in less damage

Maybe they were pioneering the all-new Y-shaped neck profile! ;D

yeah comprehensively ruined.

The twelve string flat top bridge isn't even in the right place! intonation point is most likely between the points of the f holes

There's a total plague of it

My biggest bugbear is routing the tops. Hofner semis have surface mounted pickups it's not like routing a solid body for a humbucker where it's a bit sad but can be hidden...it fundamentally alters the construction and sound of the guitar

yeah. from what i've seen. hofners (except the violin basses) tend to get the poor mods.
