Hahaha housing prices fell during a brief period which prompted big purchases which then pushed them up again.(at least in some countries)

Yep, I remember seeing them in the pawn shops for about £200-250 and thinking they were basically toy guitars. If only we all had the foresight

bought all stock red '65 Mustang in DC area for 1400$ six years ago. Seems like a steal now, since I see them listed for 3k euro on european marketplaces

Re: Cheapest way into a vintage offset?
I saw a newer one,1970ish , for $500 usd at a guitar store in Tucson Arizona a couple years later and considered it an extremely overpriced guitar..johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Fri Mar 11, 2022 4:10 amYep, I remember seeing them in the pawn shops for about £200-250 and thinking they were basically toy guitars. In 92 I also walked past a 60s matching headstock Sherwood green Jaguar at a guitar shop in Manhattan.. believe it was $5-$600.. but I was there to buy a brand new Les Paul Studio for $500. one of the worst guitars I'd ever spent more than $200 on.. but I was 14 and $500usd was a lot of newspapers delivered
There was a time where I was given a Roland Re 301.. and didn't have $40 in my pocket to pick up a Roland SRE 555 at a garage sale.. you could also find Traynor amps in the trash (here in Toronto) pawnshops full of them for nothing hahaha.. granted I do prefer my boss RE20 to the 301.. I can't stand tape..

Re: Cheapest way into a vintage offset?
I decided to look into getting a ‘60s Fender in late 2020. Reverb, eBay and Craigslist were about my only options, so I spent a few weeks obsessively stalking them. Like most people, I wanted a Mustang or a Duo Sonic, but it didn’t take long to realize that i didn't want to pay what it would take to get into one. (Ask me in a few years what i think about that decision.)
That lead me to Musicmaster IIs and Broncos. Pretty soon I decided I wanted as clean, early and original of one as i could find for not much. (I’d already downgraded to a one-pickup guitar, so why compromise further?) Made an offer on a sweet MMII (neck date Jan 66, with original case also in great shape) on Reverb and got it for $1,100 and free shipping. I don’t think it’ll ever be as sexy to most people as two-pickup offset, but I live on the neck pickup anyway and both that and the neck on this baby are really wonderful.

If we’d all had had the foresight, they would have been at current prices 20 years ago, haha.johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Fri Mar 11, 2022 4:10 amYep, I remember seeing them in the pawn shops for about £200-250 and thinking they were basically toy guitars. If only we all had the foresight

Re: Cheapest way into a vintage offset?
I have a line on a 65 Mustang for a great price but it’s a refin and I can’t confirm if it’s an overspray or an actual strip and repaint job without buying it. Allegedly the original owner was deployed to Viet Nam in the late 60s and as a surprise his kid brother and sister decided to “fix” it by painting over the body so I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it were just shitty typical spray paint from way back when and the original finish is intact.
Wondering what my liability would be with it. There are lots of $3000+ Mustangs on Reverb, but also a bunch of ~$2000 that have been sitting an awfully long time. Let’s say I can pick this thing up for $1,000 - you guys think I could double my money? Worst case probably is that it was stripped and painted in a goofy red, in which case it ends up maybe fetching me $1200 on a good day? How close or far off am I lol

With things like this I think it's a big risk if your only intention is to flip it. It could be anything (see my thread from last year or so when that red 65 turned out to be a mess).
If you can get it for $1000 and don't mind doing a bit of sprucing up and keeping it it's a no-brainer.

what people are "asking", and "getting" is often different, though both are eye watering atm..

Re: Cheapest way into a vintage offset?
Oh should have mentioned, I played it and it’s set up surprisingly well, has OG case, bridge cover and trem arm, it’s just painted over on the body by some monsters decades ago. Frets are like brand new, in surprisingly good shape compared to what I thought when I first looked at it. But yeah, yr advice still makes sense.johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Mon Mar 14, 2022 5:01 amWith things like this I think it's a big risk if your only intention is to flip it. I mean, for $1k, I'd buy it, do a load of work to it...then sell it on here for a loss...so don't take my advice too stronglyMechanical Birds wrote: ↑Mon Mar 14, 2022 12:57 pm

My rule of thumb for stuff like that is the same rule you see on those "storage locker" shows on cable TV. .... only buy on what you see.johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Mon Mar 14, 2022 5:01 amWith things like this I think it's a big risk if your only intention is to flip it. The value of parts is pretty fixed, especially when you're talking hardware and pickups. They don't fluctuate as wildly as the body and neck, since there is no finish to protect or other issues.
So add up the current retail price on the parts that you can see in photos, if it's close enough to the asking price for the whole guitar (even say, 80%) then you're good and won't be underwater on it.

Re: Cheapest way into a vintage offset?
Yeah, I’ve played it and it has all the trimmings intact. I think at the very least I could make a couple hundred bucks. If it happens I’ll post pics of course!Highnumbers wrote: ↑Mon Mar 14, 2022 2:39 pmMy rule of thumb for stuff like that is the same rule you see on those "storage locker" shows on cable TV. .... only buy on what you see.johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Mon Mar 14, 2022 5:01 amWith things like this I think it's a big risk if your only intention is to flip it. Re: Cheapest way into a vintage offset?
I would totally buy it, if there's nothing wrong with it except for the paint.
