Don't know if there are any other Jonathan Richman fans out there, but I happened upon a video of him playing an oddly-colored pre-CBS Jazzmaster:

Looks just like Maui blue, but the story goes , in his pre- Modern Lovers days he had an affinity for Howard Johnsons restaurants.
He painted the guitar to match the restaurant's blue and orange color scheme, and decorated it with Howard Johnson's stickers.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of JR, especially with that Modern Lovers line-up. Looking at that picture I thought it might be his Jaguar with swapped pickups, due to what looked like chrome at the edges of the scratchplate, but it actually looks like he's added some tinfoil along with the paint job.

I can't tell who the drummer is but wasn't their drummer or one of their drummers David Robinson who went on to me The Cars drummer?

I remember a road trip from my youth where I had the looooong live version of Ice Cream Man on high rotation. It's kind of a nonsense song (like a lot of his repertoire), but my friends grew to love its simple charm as I did.

Funny this thread has resurfaced as I just came on to post this version of Affection on the long Offset Videos thread. The opening shot shows how wrong I was - those are little silver star decals (sic) he's attached.

Yes, he was in the early '70s Modern Lovers line-up along with Jerry Harrison. The drummer in the video is Dee Sharpe.
