Newbie question for identifying Pre CBS Jazzmaster body

Post by Stolenchild » Tue May 26, 2020 1:52 am

Hi everyone,
I just found your great forum with lots of infos on jazzmasters while I was searching the web for infos on Pre CBS Jazzmaster parts.

I own a selfmade Firemaster (or Jazzbird as I would call it) and I have a refinished Fender 1962 Jazzmaster with a 68 neck.

I wanted to get my hands on an affordable Pre-CBS Jazzmaster to play (not to look at).
I thought a "cheap" way would be to get the important parts and build another good Partscaster.

I came upon a stripped Jazzmaster body which was said to be a 1964 (because of pot and pickup dates).
But I can't find nail holes on the front and it is a 4 piece body! I do have the correct router markings as far as I can see and the closed walnut holes on the backsides. In the cavities there are the leftover sunburst nitro colors and in the neck pocket it looks like it should with the uncolored stick strip.

Here you find Fotos:

where there 4 piece bodies before CBS took over?

Thanx in advance,
Stefan

They stopped the nail holes in late '64, so it could be from that year. Also, I believe around '64 is also when they started doing target bursts, mainly to hide the multi-piece bodies. Also, Fender pretty much always did weird/inconsistent stuff, so the four piece body doesn't strike me as being too out of place.

It looks legit to me, either way.

There probably were some 4-piece bodies, but there being no nail holes and the "S" marking seem to say 66-67 to me.
Doesn't look like a '64 body to me.

True. It also wasn't uncommon for Fender to use old parts/mismatching parts in guitars. Like a '65 or '66 guitar with '64 pots isn't an unheard of thing either.

Thank you very much for your Inputs,

what would you say ist a reasonable price for this? I've Seen some stripped Bodies on Reverb but I think those prices over 1200€ are way too high.

My guess is that a fair price these days would be in the 500-700 range for a body like that.
