Took the neck off and found this. This does suggest that it really is a refin, right?

Looks like it could’ve been black and maybe candy apple red? Where it’s chipped to the wood, it looks like black is under the white, and there seems to be some red kicking about also.

Got this back from the luthier recently. After that I found a used mastery bridge, and was a bit of shocker how much it changed the feel and especially the sustain of the guitar. Not sure I prefer it, but definitely interesting.

i do like the front finish! looks natural, real.
the paint on the thimbles is the only things that bothers me.

funny i've had the Mastery on my '65 Jag for years.
but i was just thinking since i'm not playing in live bands much right now,
i might enjoy going back to stock, or probably a Mustang bridge.

cheers!

Yeah, the paint on the thimbles was a giveaway that I hadn't really thought about or noticed. Finish stays for sure, I like it too.

Switched back now, and although the sustain especially on the G-string drops quite a bit, I just like the floaty feeling of the tremolo with a rocking type bridge a lot more. With a mastery on, it feels like a different guitar.

cool. nobody buys a Jaguar especially for sustain... but i do admire a Mastery for what it can provide. it lets me be a 'lead guitarist' with some offset Fenders that may not have been intended for rock lead work. it's nice to get that twang and plink of the Surf nature, and still be able to soar into 70's-90's chaotic future sounds on certain sections.

but in light of not much full-band jamming or gigging, i might like to take my '65 back toward native Surf-mode. The Mustang bridge is a good compromise.

i have an AV65 Jazzmaster that i've modded a bit with WRHB-style pups for ambient/soundscapey gigs. i'm thinking the Mastery might be better suited there.

your Jag seems like a real survivor, and since it plays nicely i'm glad you're not going on a gung-ho full makeover!

I wouldn't touch it, personally. It looks amazing.
Enjoy!

Are you sure the colour contrast wasn't caused by one of those body cover things?

Yeah, I tracked down the previous owner who had it before it got to the small dealer that I bought it from. He was behind the duct tape strap lock solution, and had also sanded down the back to see if there was an original finish somewhere to be uncovered. So I think what happened was that he just sanded off the yellowed lacquer top coat on the back and ended up with this result (I'm glad he stopped when he did). I guess this was just the way you treated a Jaguar in the Sthlm postpunk scene around the mid 2000s...

One weird thing was that the luthier that sorted out the Jag for me was also working on a refinished pre-CBS P-bass at the same time, and sported the exact same nicotine-stained Olympic White/Blonde finish.

Anyway, the Jag sounds and now also plays really amazing, and hadn't it been both refinished and mistreated, I wouldn't have been able to afford it, so I'm happy with it just the way it is.

hehe, yeah, I've started realise that about these guitars (it is basically my first offset after mostly having played teles). And actually, I feel like that the percussive attack and short sustain of this particular guitar, in combination with the floaty trem and the slightly microphonic pickups gives it a really special quality that was a bit lost when I switched out the vintage mustang bridge. The mastery made it feel more like other electric guitars that I've had in the past, so for a brief moment I was really excited. But then I came to the conclusion that sustain is overrated, and I liked it more the way it originally came to me.

How do you feel the AV65 JM compares to your vintage Jag btw? I've been searching a bit for one of those, but they seem pretty hard to find these days.

interestingly, i find them quite similar. it seems to me the AV65's hit the mark in terms of feel, and pretty good build quality. the neck is just a bit chunkier, and has a similar, sturdy feel. the fretboard radius is similar.

i feel the bridge and 'tremolo' are a bit cheap and clunky. i actually broke the trem collet while physically adjusting it. that never happened to me on a few 60's offsets i've had. i also wish i could get more sustain from it for leads and textures. the stock bridge seems a bit flimsier than the 60's stock.
my 1959 JM can sustain for weeks on its original bridge. that's why i think i'll try the Mastery on the AV65, and return the 1965 Jag to more of an early Surf-plink with a standard bridge. i still want that sound at hand, too.

the idea for my AV65 had always been to take it into the future quite a bit. i put WRHB-style pups from Novak, he makes them to fit the stock JM slots without routing the wood. i went for kind of a Sonic Youth vibe and i play it in an ambient group where i use a lot of different tools and objects for texture. i just loved the Firemist Silver color run that they did very briefly back then, and went from there. the "Firemist Jazzblaster" has two p arts, and begins here:
