A holy grail of Jaguars.

Now this has upset my day.

Have seen the picture of this guitar from the book mentioned years ago and have never found out anything about it apart from it being a one-off, and it seems the guitar is now at Well Strung Guitars in NY state.

I thought I had read it was in Japan.

The Fender custom shop built a replica for a NAMM show a few years ago. Could never find out what happened to that one either.




Well if I cant have it, at least I now know it does really exist.

Interesting to see Martin Kelly's name show up.

As soon as I saw it I hopped over to Facebook and realised it's the same guy who frequents a Vox guitars group & has a crazy collection of Teardrops & Phantoms. God knows what his Fender collection is like (although if he's in the UK it might not be so impressive).

As to the hollowbody Jag, another little snippet of "offset" Fender history that's completely new to me. I thought it was a purely 90s/2000s Fender Japan thing.

This Jag resided at Songbirds for the past few years, it was available to see in person and it is a really interesting and cool guitar. A one-off prototype of a guitar Fender never took to production, IIRC.

Songbirds really had a ridiculous amount of historically significant guitars for a public museum, a real loss that it closed its doors. Probably won’t be anything like that again for a very long time.

Super cool. It's a shame it didn't make it to market, I'd play the hell out of that thing.

I dig it. The flat bound top really changes the vibe of the instrument.

When I saw that well strung had this I gasped out loud. I first saw this in "Fender: The Golden Years" and fell in love. It was fun to see it (even via the internet) out in the wild.

Anyone know where the custom shop replica is ?

I had looked at a lot of photos of the guitars at Songbirds but didnt see this one.

Martin is the founder of that FB group on Vox guitars. He is concurrently writing books on both JMI-era Vox guitars (UK-made) and the definitive history of Rickenbacker guitars. I think the Rick book is coming out first, sometime next year.

His Fender collection is well impressive. Especially offsets

I only found out about that place a couple of months ago when they announced they were closing. Seems like a real loss as they had an insane collection and as I understand they occasionally loaned them out to be played. Considering how everybody wants dumb money for anything vintage these days, and see instruments more as investments than anything else, a place giving reasonable access to historically significant instruments is a bit of a unicorn.

He is to guitar books what Colin Blunstone is to singing... I'd read anything he has to write, about any manufacturer. Cannot WAIT for that Vox book, there are really very few people who go as deep as he does.

If he hadn't written that book I would have never known.

Absolutely, Martin approaches writing a book differently than others. Too many other guitar book authors (ahem, looking at you Tony Bacon) just churn them out using the same old photos and pedestrian info. Martin aims to write the definitive history on each of these marques.

The Vox Guitar book will be a new one, as nobody has even remotely approached that subject, almost all books about Vox have focused on amplifiers (which Jim Elyea covered extensively in his massive tome on that subject).

The Rickenbacker book Martin is working on is especially exciting. Numerous books have been approached on that particular brand over the years, most with wildly incomplete information and production records, or lacking really high-quality photos. These books have to be as informative as they are inviting to read.

Not meaning to go off topic too much but have you see the relatively new book on EKO, written by Remo Serrangeli. Released a few years ago it was originally printed in Italian but there's an English translation either on the way or out already.
