1973 Jazzmaster

Post by gishuk » Thu Dec 03, 2020 7:39 am

Since I got my 70s Starcaster and with what an amazing guitar that is, I wondered how 70s Jazzmasters were. Not so much a fan of the black pickguard and Strat knobs look, so had to be early 70s for tort and witch hats. Living in rural England the only way I'd get to try anything like this is to buy one so I sold my Les Paul and after some time watching Reverb this one came up for what I think was a very fair price.

Its either 1973 or 74, the serial number lookup shows that it could be either. Its in really good condition and all original, possibly apart from the tremolo arm, or at least the tip on it. Just a mark on the treble side of the body, which seems to be a common place to get dinged as both my 60s JMs have a knock in that spot. The frets have basically no wear at all and the back of the neck has had the gloss knocked back to satin, probably with steel wool as it hasn't gone through the finish, just dulled it.
Feels very nice to play. The neck is chunky, much bigger than my 60s ones. I put the Mastery on there as I had it sat around, the stock bridges feel odd to me as I end up rolling the low E a bit when palm muting, slightly disconcerting feeling. Great sound though, the pickups are very impressive.

Not the best pictures as natural light is somewhat hard to come by at the moment!

Gorgeous!

Are these nitro or poly by this point?

Thanks!

Yeah its a poly finish, I believe they switched around 1968 but I could be wrong on that!

Well well, that's two guitars of yours I'm definitely in love with! I think we must have very similar taste ;)

I had a 73 JM as well - Lake Placid Blue. Loved it, though the board was almost black on mine, yours looks a touch light to me, though it might just be the pics - as you say the conditions have hardly been ideal for photos lately!

Anyway, congrats on another beaut!

Great minds and all that :D

The fretboard is on the lighter side of rosewood for sure, lighter than my other JMs anyway. I'd love a custom colour, LPB is always stunning.

Definitely of the option now that at least when it comes to offsets the 70s stuff is rather underrated!

That's sexy as hell, congrats! I have a '66 with a pretty skinny neck, and it's the one thing I've always wished was different about it as I prefer chunkier necks.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Both. The burst is nitrocellulose (as is the headstock front), the clearcoat that seals it all is (thick) polyester.

Absolutely killer. In case I missed that you already wrote it, do you know the weight?
