My 65 CAR Jazzmaster (delayed NGD)

I've been lurking around on here since picking up my first vintage guitar and thought I'd share my guitar with you. I picked it up around Thanksgiving from a local store. My goal was to invest money, but do it on something I could enjoy, so I wanted a guitar that looked great, was very playable, but wasn't so pristine that I felt bad touching it. I had to wait until I opened it up to post because I wanted to be able to share pictures of the inside.

What I was told about the guitar at the store:
Refinished, but in the original color. Could only tell with a blacklight test (didn't see it).
All original parts, except maybe the switch knob

If it's a refinish, it really old and/or really well done. The finish checking is beautiful, and one of my favorite parts visually of the guitar. Looks like the pots have been replaced. Unless I'm doing it wrong they date to 2001. At first I though it might need a refret, but after setting it up to my liking and getting used to vintage low frets, I'm thinking it's okay for a while. You can see a little wear on 2-3, but nothing that affects playability. The A tuner shaft is a little bent, but still works fine. I love the sound. I was thinking of getting a JM before, and decided to go vintage instead of modern used. I've been very happy with this as a player and as a wall decoration. Best of both worlds.

Looks great. And it doesn't look like a refin to me.

The finish checking is a bit odd and looks more in line with a refin but from the pics you might have an original finish - they sometimes painted over SB and the silver undercoat is correct for CAR. Kinda looks right but as you say, maybe just an old, good refin...

How did they verify the finish?

He said it was only a partial refinish and pointed out the silver undercoat to verify the original CAR. I don't think the headstock was refinished. Also he mentioned that white covers/pickguard were only used with custom colors, and that guard definitely looks original. Guy had to be honest because he could have easily passed it off as original unless someone put a blacklight to it (Which I have not). My thought is that he may not be an expert w/ the blacklight and misidentified the refinish. From the little exploration I've done blacklight tests aren't necessarily conclusive.

So nice! This is the one from Jimmy's in Florida?

I was so close to buying this one, the store owner made sure to hold this one for you. Congrats! The early '65s might be my favorite vintage Jazzmasters, love the neck profile and those pickups especially.

Sweet guitar!

Interesting with old refins. Compared my supposedly refinished (old) blonde 1965 jaguar with a couple of others that are not refinished but in the same color and it was really impossible to tell them apart colorwise by just looking at them side by side.

Yeah, I was wondering if anyone on the forum was from around here and would recognize it. Jimmy's is a great store, I will definitely be back at some point. So weird that the best place for Vintage Guitars, Custom Shop Fenders, and Reissue LPs in Orlando isn't in Orlando. That hour drive is worth it, though.

Yep, his shop is not only off the beaten path from Orlando but pretty quiet online and focuses on local sales. They get some pretty cool stuff though, like this JM. Glad you scooped this up and it's someone on OSG it's a very cool guitar.

anything specific about these EARLY '65s? ? are the pickups different from earlier years?
I'm curious cos there's a '65 here near me that I'm tempted to go check out, but I've not seen many vintage guitars in their store over the years so I'm not certain about their process in determining its cred... that said, I'm not justified in my concern, since I'm only in there every now and then

also wondering about the fret markers - they look .... strange. like they're popping out. hard to tell from pics, tho...

it's listed at about $7,500 USD. equivalent to paying $6,500 USD before freight and import duty
