Once Upon A Time

First: Not good pics at all, but until I stumbled onto this old album, I had forgotten these 2 pics existed.

The date on the edge of the pic is 1971, and that would be about right. Bought it and an old Gibson tube amp for $150 in Montgomery, Alabama. Traded it a year later for a brand new Gretsch Nashville. Sometimes I think I should have kept it, but it didn’t have the sound that the people I was working for wanted. Anyway... here it is.

Afterthought: I’m not sure that the neck on my 63 Jag isn’t as skinny as the Mosrite. It would take a side-by-side to convince me it isn’t.

I bought one in about ‘80 and gave it to a friend when I backed my van into his car .
I remembered it played well but the details are a smoky daze.

Beautiful Mosrite. I wouldn't kick a Nashville out of bed either.

The only true thing I recall as far as sound is that it oozed “bluesy” in the middle position. And... I still have that Nashville. ;D

Here's my '66 a bit more recently...

Awesome! :w00t: Wish my year-1971 pics were that quality. Thanks much for adding that beauty to the thread. I never did know what year my Mosrite was, but that’s a match. No exposed poles, unpainted neck and head, and straight mounted neck PU.

As requested... this what I traded the Mosrite for. One owner since 1971. I do have the pick guard, but those lil gold screws finally kept working loose so I retired the pick guard to keep from breaking, or scratching, something at an inconvenient time/place.

It dawns on me that I’ve had these hang tags for 50 years.

I forgot to include this pic last night. No 6120 is complete without the pad. The foam has completely collapsed, but not a cut or scratch on the pad.

The management here seems pretty understanding. :)

Holy crap that's a looker.

I had a massive yen for Gretsches, especially 6120s/Nashvilles/Chets before I got into offsets. I'll always have a soft spot for them and this one's a looker. You don't see quite so many double-cutaway Nashvilles either. Great guitar.

It'll be 1966 as (as far as I can see) yours didn't have the trussrod adjustment at the headstock end so it makes it one of the earlier MkV models like mine. Later on you'll see a little black trussrod cover appear at the headstock. Though, having said that, Mosrite was pretty random in the way they ordered things and brought design changes in and out.

You touched on every guitar owner’s quandary. Nothing is set in stone. :derp: Looking at the serial number alone, it’s actually a 65 by both Gretsch’s sequential system, and the date code they went to just before the Baldwin days. I hate to think it sat in that music store window from (circa) 65 to late 71–when I took possession of it. But it was brand new when I got my hands on it.

The other quandary is... is it a “Chet” or a “Nashville?” My pick guard says only Chet Atkins, so it’s a Chet. I’ve just always called it a Nashville because it instantly spurs a mental image of that faded orange finish.

And a theme I’ve picked up on here in OSG is that we’re merely conservators of these vintage (and future vintage) instruments. This one I can point to and say I gigged with it for over a decade before I couldn’t force myself to carry it into another beer joint. It only has 1 scratch in the finish, less than a half inch, just behind the standby switch, that doesn’t go to the bone.

I kinda wish I’d have known that the old Mosrite was a 66. But, in 1971, 66 was no big deal. :)

Just clicked that that one has the snap-on back cover. Possibly my favorite feature of Baldwin-era Gretsches. That, and the pop-up mutes.
