Inherited Offset - 70-71' Jaguar
In my other thread (Inherited offset - 66' Jazzmaster) I mentioned about getting some guitars when my dad passed away a few weeks ago. Here's the other offset gem. He bought this one brand new in 1970 or 1971. He kept it in pretty good shape and the frets have some wear but not close to needing replaced.
In the case he still had the owners manual, cord, polishing cloth and tremolo bar. He kept the bridge cover on it too! The real surprise was that when he finally did his first string change he kept the originals and dated the pack! He also had a nice thick neck strap with it. Knowing him he probably bought it with the guitar!
The serial number puts it at 70'-71'. I pulled the neck when doing a full cleanup but it's got the infamous green stamp that is almost totally illegible. Here's where things get interesting; The Volume pot is dated to 1970 while the tone pot is 1965! A side note: I traded my 80' antigua Stratocaster to my dad very briefly in the mid 80's for this guitar and when I did I had a hot lead pickup installed (probably a Seymour Duncan 1/4 pound). The original pickup was still in the case but the four digit code suggests 1967?!?
I know for a fact that except for the month or so I had this guitar it had never been out of my dads possession since new so the date codes seem pretty weird. Another oddity is that it's a A width neck. Playing back to back with the 66' Jazzmaster it is obvious that it's narrower at the nut and thicker back to front. This piece of my family history isn't going anywhere anytime soon!!

Those are some mighty light (10-38) strings for a Jaguar!
Both this and your Jazzmaster are just fantastic, thanks for posting.

I’m sorry for your loss and hope you cherish these amazing guitars in remembrance of him.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

A perfect memento to remember your father.
In 65/66 I think it was Forrest White at Fender who ordered a shit load of pots that took until 71/72 to use up. (I think he also lost his job or was asked to leave Fender by CBS for it). That is white guitars from 66 to say early 72 can still be found with mid 60s dated pots.

relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

This is choice! Beautiful. Sorry about your dad. My dad passed away the day after Christmas so... yeah... condolences.
Isn’t Sunburst a guarantee it’s NOT a refin?

This is awesome- I hope my kids find some of the same nostalgia/connection with me and my guitars when I'm gone.
I hope this brings you a small amount of peace & comfort, and I'm so sorry for your loss.

Thanks everyone. We all just move on and remember the best we can. Playing the Jag does feel like all is well.

The A width neck is very different than all the fenders I have. My 76’ mustang is the same scale length but is a normal B width. This particular Jag is kind of deep front to back so the thumb wraparound thing with my medium sized hands isn’t any easier than my Jazzmaster with its B width but thinner front to back profile.
I hope that helps.

Oh, you will know if you have an A width neck. It obvious as soon as you play it. But because this Jag neck is so thick it doesn’t feel weird or anything. The narrow width becomes more pronounced closer to the nut as expected.
It’s so different to me because my 76’ Mustang has a wider neck, is thinner front to back, and has a way smaller body but they’re both the same scale.

Beautiful guitar // Beautiful story!!
I'm very sorry for your loss. My grandpa died a couple of years ago and we got to keep a couple of his guitars, three beautiful old "requintos" that he used through the 60's. Family treasure for sure!!
