You know, I often think about opening a guitar shop, since I already spend so much time scouring the internet for guitars and related stuff and Id'd enjoy it more than working my current job...but then I think about how much guitar shops probably struggled over the past year due to COVID and how listing a '62 jag for almost $9k is a shot in the dark to push prices into the stratosphere and keep the rent paid by selling a guitar marked up 300%. And how I get it as I'd also be trying to keep the lights on....but damn dude. A '62 jag for $8.5k. Fucking madness

And that's the other thing that came to mind while I was typing that last comment - I've heard manufacturers can't even keep up with demand right now and the shops can't keep inventory. Wild to think about.

I'm wondering if we'll get to a point where we'll see a bunch of stuff flood the market.

If scouring the internet is the only way that you'd be able to find inventory, don't consider opening a guitar store.

Finding inventory at below-retail prices is the hardest part of that business and it was made even harder during Covid because traditional outlets for fresh inventory (especially guitar shows) were all closed. No wonder people are stretching their asking prices as far as the market will allow - there isn't presumably another guitar walking in the door!

This is also why it's difficult running a mail order-only guitar shop. When the widow down the street doesn't know you're around because you don't have a brick and mortar location, good luck buying her husband's old guitar.

Not that we don't see dealers buying stuff online and flipping it, but at that point they are competing with the general public and have to be extremely quick to snag anything that is at sub-retail prices.

Ive just got into an argument with a guy on facebook trying to sell a sunburst 65 Jag with a dubious appraisal and a non original case for £6k.

He’s now shirty because I told him it was expensive.

Fair enough, noone thinks theyre being an asshole but still.
His argument is: its all “original”, its “rare” and custom shop ones cost £4k so should be £6k.

Maybe Im wrong but £6k seems really expensive for a sunburst jag

Thought I was over the vintage bug and have been casually following this thread just see how others are thinking about it.

But something has come up that is as rare as rocking horse shit around here and it has got me thinking.

It is priced at the top of the market, according to this thread, but its rarity over this way together with the opportunity of actually being able to play it before buying is tempting.

Will see if it is still around in a week or so.

Just buy the damn thing.
