Replacement Pickguard fit for 1963 JM

Post by wastedyouth » Wed Feb 10, 2021 9:55 am

I am looking for a less expensive, temporary pickguard for a 1963 jazzmaster. I don’t know if the patterns were consistent then, can anyone recommend an option that should be a drop-in fit?

I've had no problem test-fitting a regular AVRI pickguard to a vintage Jazzmaster, I believe that pattern is correct.

But I should add that the AVRI guards aren't very accurate in appearance to an original guard (whether it's mint, parchment or especially tort). So if the guard is going to live on the guitar for any real length of time, I'd highly recommend a Spitfire guard instead. The guitar is worth it!

So, spitfire is like $250 with a waiting list. But there is a new guy on the block with a company titled Lava guards. Paolo_ray is his forum name. Was $150ish but to get it to me in the states was around 190. Anyway, it is good quality and on par with vintage tort I’ve owned. Still expensive, but not as much as spitfire or vintage

Excellent, thank you. I got an AVRI shield, it looks like I can use that as a pattern to make a board to pin the original guard while I do some work.
