1965 Resto

Post by savantjk » Thu Mar 11, 2021 6:34 pm

I was scrolling through Facebook when I saw a listing that just said “guitars for sale contact for info” with no pics. I said ok, I’ll bite and sent a message. I received about 30 pics from the guy and while looking through saw one of my favorite things - a messed up old Fender. I asked for a price and additional pics and he snapped some for me and we reached an agreement on purchase price. Met up a day later. I planned to play the guitar as it was for a bit before restoration. I plugged it up and played for about five minutes then disassembled. Headstock was drilled for Sperzels, so gotta grab conversion bushings. Older refins on neck and body. Bill Lawrence pickups with 3 way toggle and wired VTVT. Body doesn’t have additional routing but oddly enough has wood added that I have to remove! I sold the electronics and tossed the roughly made pickguard. Plan to really transform this guitar. Dan is out of the refin game unfortunately- he has painted a ‘74 tele deluxe and my ‘59 burst jazzmaster and I would have loved to send this to him too. Sending the neck and body to Riggio for refin and refret. Riggio came highly recommended and after reviewing his work and talking to him I’m excited!

Right? Guess the previous owner really didn’t want it falling off.

Cool find!

Mind hipping me to this Riggio fellow? I currently have a neck in queue at MJT but I'm also shopping around for alternatives...

Joe Riggio of Riggio Guitars. Check em out on IG. Supposed to have very accurate colors and has some very nice looking builds of his own as well.

Ha ha ha, that almost belongs in the 'why did you do this thing to me thread'! Good luck with the restoration.

Excellent! Early '65s are some of my favorite Jazzmasters, love the neck shape.

That neck looks perfect! Exactly worn in all the right places, glad that's not refinished.

Looks like it's had plenty of sins that need correcting, but this is the right way to buy them - decal already gone so you can do whatever custom color you want and still have the matching headstock option. Congrats!

+1 on Riggio, I actually prefer the way he refinishes guitars over Danocaster. Dan is absolutely talented but all of his refin work looks the same, exactly the same aging etc. Riggio is well familiar with how an original finish should look and can do a few different levels of aging (or none at all) if that's your jam.

So there was a bunch of extra wood glued inside the routes even though the Humbucker setup was pickguard mounted. Maybe it housed something different before that. No ideas there. I removed that today. Still coarse and I have some smoothing and some glue to removed, but I’m going to acetone the body soon and hopefully move through that all in one go. The neck feels a bit sticky like maybe they waxed it or something. I’ll let Riggio determine if that can be tamed without stripping what is under it. Hopefully an easy solution and just a headstock refin.

Welp FedEx and UPS wanted $100 to ship a 10lb 26” box. Shifting the plan around. Also - I just realized I didn’t put this in the vintage restoration section. Sorry about that.

Something doesn't seem right, I shipped a Jazzmaster + case via UPS Ground for less than that. If you're doing neck off it should be much cheaper than 100. I also insured my guitar for like 1,800 or so. try UPS Ground. That neck looks so smooth and fast! What color are you going for the refin? Or is it a secret ? :shifty:

I always use MJT, I've heard of Riggio but forgot about him... Time to go down the IG rabbit hole!

Yeah I tried UPS ground and FedEx. 26” box 10lbs. Don’t know what the deal is. With a UPS discount code I recently got it down to $70. I ended up sending the neck off for a refret first because it was a shorter quote time than the refin.
