This one has almost everything I dislike about older Fenders.

But I LOVE it. Looks like the perfect proto-skate-punk machine!
100% this.

I wasn't looking for this kind of Mustang at all but something between the awful burst (that I've dubbed 'miseryburst'), chopping-block body and confusion of parts made me instantly fall in love with it. It's exactly the only half decent guitar I'd have been able to afford in the early 90s from a pawn shop as a snotty little punk.

I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

Haha, same. Sadly the pricing is no longer punk-friendly.

that's a pretty sweet find! i'd have trouble resisting it, too.

maybe it doesn't seem especially desirable at first glance, but it really is quite the time capsule from a certain confluence of eras and ideas at Fender.

i'd happily continue to thrash it a bit without worry, too.

but personally, i'd be careful about stickers - maybe use my own low-tack adhesive applied to the backing of the sticker, instead of whatever random adhesive the old stickers have.
only because that nitro perfectly showcases the compromise between the aesthetic and actual quality (cheaper student model).

and i now regret putting my band's sticker on a 70's nitro Fender some 25 years ago... it was a cheap-ish instrument back then, but the sticker decayed into a gooey mess with the nitro and the mess kind of interfered with my playing for a while!

cheerio!

Yeah, I have been starting to lean that way since originally posting actually. I've popped a little one on the pickguard but hovered over any on the paint and thought against it every time. It's a fight between doing what I want to do vs doing what's best for the instrument. I've dug out the perfect vintage Suicidal Tendancies sticker too which doesn't help the situation πŸ˜‚ although, I seem to have somehow misplaced it already (my spare room is utter chaos) so maybe that's a sign.

It would be such a shame to put on the stickers on the nitro... guitar looks great as is!

Yeah, and we'd end up with a "'Vintage Mustang with mysterious Puerto Rican chupacabra" thread sooner or later. :D

I'm just going to put this one on and leave it at that. As a compromise.

^^^ well played!

that's got the vibe and the era - and the transparency works great with the guard texture.
