Thinking about selling my 1962 Jazzmaster
Ok so my wife and I purchased some acreage in central Texas and we are now in the process of building our house. This is the only reason I am considering selling my 1962 Jazzmaster. It is not all original, I'll go in to that later...
So I am wanting to ask OSG: QWhat I should reasonably ask for it?
It is a:
1962 Jazzmaster
Burgundy Mist refinish done by MJT
Rewound 1962 black bottom pickups, rewound by EP Custom pickups
Original pots and wiring, except for the pickups
Original Trem and arm
Mastery bridge but I have the original bridge as well
Original frets
The high E tuner has been replaced with a vintage 2 line Kluson tuner
There is a poorly done route job under the neck pickup cavity, looks like it was done with hand tools (not the proper ones)
It is missing the brass shielding below the pickups
I have a case but it is not original
I think that's the it as far as original and non-original

Tough one. I'm not the most qualified here by any stretch but going by similar-ish listing on Reverb right now there's a shop (Southside) selling a couple of pre-CBS refin's, both not completely original. Those are priced around 7.5-9k... the trouble with yours would be the routing, and I expect that would shave off a couple of thousand easily.
So, say the baseline is $7.5k. Take off the 'NYC Guitar Store tax' of at least 20%, then a couple of thousand for the bad screwdriver rout job (I'm guessing here without pictures of severity).
In open market, $4000 maybe? On here? Fuck knows. It's the sort of guitar I'd often gravitate towards as I don't care too much about originality...but I'm not much a fan of MJT relic jobs

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Not sure I would want to sell for $4k thoughjohnnysomersett wrote: ↑Mon Aug 22, 2022 11:31 amTough one. Yeah, unless you need the money it's likely not worth it. I remember reading that a refin knocks off 30-50% of the value instantly. Then routing/irreversible mods probably another +30% off of that, depending on how severe.
What was it originally, sunburst?

When I acquired it, it was stripped so just a natural finishjohnnysomersett wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 6:53 amYeah, unless you need the money it's likely not worth it. I would probably list for 5.5k and be happy getting an offer for $5k. Quick sale would be $4.5k

I had a '62 Jazzmaster that I sold at the Dallas Guitar Show in the late 90's for $600. It's the one I tell the stories about. I would love to replace it but it sucks knowing that I'll never be able to afford one (or I guess be willing to pay that much for one). Vintage guitar prices are out of control. Oh well. This is great looking guitar. Good luck if you decide to sell it.

I sold a Coronado II bass for $150 around that same time to pay a car payment (young and poor) so I feel your pain.

Re: Thinking about selling my 1962 Jazzmaster
Johnny and graceless are right in line with my first thoughts.
factor in a bit of patience with the current oddball whack market and you *might* reach $6K.
if you had asked me last year, i would have been clueless, having been discouraged by
even looking at the nutty market, and being among those who lost disposable income during covid.
but this year, i've been getting back to regular paying gigs again, and at the same time, quite encouraged by some vintage bargains. recent big price drops on Reverb, some actual competitive bidding on eBay (so stoked this can still happen), and some good old-fashioned in-person negotiating at NAMM and via craigslist... i feel like it's becoming more of a buyer's market again.
all that is to say, if your goal is to raise cash for a new project, list it NOW.
honestly, that relic job is a bit crude to my eyes, and that Mastery kind of dogs a real '62 (even though i *do* use a couple Mastery's on my experimental offsets) ...BUT - maybe somebody's just gotta have it! if you need every bit of dough, i would list with original bridge, and sell the Mastery separately.
(i'm curious - what year was the MJT refin? i've seen some later relic jobs of theirs that look more natural)
you could list for $6K, but be ready for some low offers, and to negotiate. maybe it'll be easy.
probably easier than 6 months form now
but when i sell something vintage and cool, i'm usually down to make a friendly deal under market examples, most often to someone i get a good vibe from. it seems to come back around when it's my turn to buy again.
if you love the guitar, find the right dude. if not so much, aim high!!
