Thoughts on this. Thinking of buying it from a work colleague. Serial number puts it at 1963 (maybe 1964). Repair the damage done by the neck pickup or leave as is?

Kewl

It depends on whether you like the neck pickup (what is it, by the way?). If not a new Lava pickguard would be my solution.

I would be all over that and probably be leaving as it’s unless the neck pickup sounds rubbish. It’s like a slightly classier cousin to Pat’s jag.

Why the hell is like, the whole truss rod adjustment side exposed? Why is the neck so high off the body?

Why is the neck so high off the body?
That was my initial question before I noticed how high the bridge is. Super-shim for break angle maybe?

The neck on mine is dated Dec 62 & the trem pocket 12/62 but the neck plate, 939xx, dates it to 63. The body on that one, other than the neck pickup, looks as good a shape as mine, so if the other stuff checks out it oughta be a keeper.
Isn’t Sunburst a guarantee it’s NOT a refin?

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I also wondered about the heel looking quite high. The price reflects the fact it's definitely not a collector's grade guitar, so I'm comfortable even if it's a re-fin.

I think any vintage butchered Fender should be brought back to original spec. That's just me tho.

While I’m all for restorations on the really far gone guitars, when it’s just a pickup route/swap, I think it’s best to leave the guitar alone.

It’s pretty cool as it sits, and plugging that route and replacing the guard wouldn’t make it original again. Seems like a real lateral move.

Curious how that pickup sounds as well.

I'm in two minds. I see the appeal of what you suggest for sure.

Sweet jag!

There was a thread on tgp in the past about someone specifically looking for those red/white/blue coiled cables.. I'll try and track it down.

Something ancient! Another one.
I love it.
Did that come with the guitar back then?
That strap looks is old, too, right?
