They could have!
Ever take a close look at one of these? You can see where Leo crossed-over to electric guitars.
"Make 'em easy to build and repair.
3-tone Sunburst was already in-house by 1958.

Those are so cool.
I had a chance to buy a dual Fender steel for $125 at a flea market last year... and didn't (kick me hard). It wasn't quite like this one though, it had Duo Sonic pickups with brown covers. It also had the switch and flat top barrel knobs. It even had the case, and some POS MIJ 70s solid state amp. I looked up the name later, but can't remember it offhand, maybe "dual professional". I can't believe I didn't buy it, I regretted it later the same day... and up until the present.

I really want to learn to play steel guitar just don't feel like shelling out the bucks for one. This would certainly be a great place to start though if I had the money.

I would LOVE to have one of those old champ lap steels with the lead tele pickup(minus the backplate) in there. Maybe I'll pick one up this year although an 8 string is more versatile...and I have been wanting a pedal steel for even longer....

I actually have seen a 7-string Fender Lap Steel with Jazzmaster style pickups before (if I remember right), It gave me a crazy idea to make a 7-string Jazzmaster at one point.

I tried one just like that except it was a single version at a local vintage shop. Sounds like no other pedal-steel. It went for $900 CAN.

Re: Did Fender ever build an 8 string Jazzmaster??
Leo did experiment with a 7-pole piece pickup at the neck for a Jazzmaster in 1958 or so. There are actual patent drawings for it. A picture appears in a few books I have seen.
He believed that having the stings between the polepieces would increase sustain by a magnetic pull on each side.
He didn't feel the strings "moved" enough at the bridge to warrant 7 poles.
That pickup could have been lifted out of a Pedal Steel.

It probably was lifted out of the same model pedal steel as I saw a few years back.IPLAYLOUD wrote: Leo did experiment with a 7-pole piece pickup at the neck for a Jazzmaster in 1958 or so. There are actual patent drawings for it. A picture appears in a few books I have seen.

It makes sense that they would have a couple variations on that pickup (as well as the others) because it cuts down manufacturing costs by making the same parts using slightly different adapters on the factory machines. Of course this is mere speculation, but I doubt that Fender had individual machines for each make/model spanish and steel guitar, if so it'd take up WAY too much shop space.
