That just looks like a seam ... so don't go stripping it or anything. But I think you've got the message by now haha.. I am however deeply depressed myself reading all this.
I think you should count yourself very lucky, by purchasing this at the price you did you've earned yourself a few pennies indeed !! or just a bloody brilliant guitar to cherish ...

I found it...original moldy case, sponge-humidifier, horribly wound strings and all (I didn't do those, by the way)...

Forgive me for my incompetence, but how the hell do I take the arm off of this thing?
I'm taking it in to be set up, and I don't want it to press against the top of the case and cause any damage...

Leaving it on in the case shouldn't cause any damage. Many people do that w/out causing any damage. There doesn't seem to be a consesus as to whether it should come out while the gutiar's in the case. Otherwise, just yank it out. It might take some effort (and repeatedly doing so might damage the teeth on the collet).
