Nice job PJ collecting these!

I have some here too, in my gold guard threads. I'll look when I have a chance.

Agreed! I will have to add my old "Mary" guard as well.

Nice title change, btw. Much more appropriate.

Found an old picture of an "Esper" JM shield I had.

Yes, would like to see Mary in here.

I know there are more Mells out there, and even a Mel (one L)! It seems there are mostly Espers on gold guards and Mells on aluminum shields.

The "B" often seen on bodies over the finish between the pickups:

Funny, sometimes the B looks different from this example (like the 2 '64 JMs shown above).

I wonder who B was? Or come to think of it, could it mean "Burst"? I don't think I've ever seen it on anything but. And now that I think of it, it seems like I've also seen SB written there. Above there is also just an S.

Anyone? Bueller?

I've seen mostly "B", but also feel like "S" is prominent, with the combo "SB" being least common. *At least given what I've seen. (Mostly your pics :D )

Maybe inspectors were identifying bodies suitable for the trans SB finish? If it was an initial, there would be lots of other ones and always in the same handwriting.

Here's a 'Mell' on the shielding of my blue refin '66 Jazzmaster.

This guitar will be going to new OSG-er Kieranplaymusic next weekend, as soon as I can get it down to him in Cork. But as I was taking photos of the guts for him, thought I'd post this up here. Kieran - you've got a Mell!
