Pretty good! I have one switch to repair and then I might see if I can demo it.

I need one of these so bad. Sleeping on that one on the guitar center site for $400 will haunt me till my dying day.

and they were only made for 2 years! The thing that really gets me is that if you want to date it by the serial number, all the Yamaha electrics made in 1966 (SG-2, SG-3, SG-5, SG-7, SG-12) have a serial number in the range 0398-3951. Meaning they made 3500 of them in total - 500 - 800 of each, for that year? Same for 1967 (serials 3952-7433). So at the outermost stretch there might be 2000 SG-3s ever made.

Hello everyone.

I see I’m pretty late to the thread here but thought I’d give it a try anyway.

I’ve inherited a 1967 Yamaha SG-3.

I’d like to sell it. I’d like to see it played or even loved.

Thought I would see if there is any interest. If so I can provide lots of pictures and answer any questions.
Bear in mind that I’m new to guitar so my knowledge is developing...

Not sure how to provide pictures here though...

Thanks
Chris.

Hiya, pics are always welcome. Just load them on your favorite image site and then link them in your post with the 'image button'. What country are you in?

But also, bear in mind that trading (or discussing a possible trade) outside the "For Sale" section is prohibited.

Hi,

This thread is pure gold! :)
I got my 1966 SG3 the other day. Have really wanted one for a long while and got it for a OK price. A case was included and if not a SG3 case, I think it´s from the period.
I bought it at a auction site and I did not realize the knobs were wrong, it has Jaguar style knobs. The string guide nut is a plastic one (I think they should be made out of metal), one tuning peg post has been replaced and the switch to the upper controls has broken off. The upper control also does not work. There is no vibrato arm, but I will purchase a new one.

The tuning heads, pick up pole screws, bridge and vibrato has rust of various degree. Is it OK to clean them up and if so how?
There are some work to be done on this one, but I had to put strings on it and it works (with the lower controls engaged anyways). :)
Here are som pics of it. I will take photos with the pickguard off as well and post.

That case looks original to me - it should have a sort of hole inside for the strap button on the upper side to fit into.

There is someone in Japan that makes replacement tremolo arms that fit quite well:

The knobs will be tough to find since they were only used on early Yamaha electrics, so ebay or Reverb could be helpful there.
Here's a pair on Reverb. ...for $180!

Tuners sometimes show up too - maybe these have the correct posts? I can't tell from their photos.

Hi Will!
Thanks for your reply!
I bought a tremolo arm from that seller yesterday, but I might have bought one that doesn´t fit... It was a SG2 arm, but I assumed they are the same for both SG2 and SG3. Well, it will show once I get it. :)
Whoa, that is a couple of expensive knobs... I think I will look around and see if I can get someone to do some 3D-modeling and print a pair. If that won´t cost too much.

Does anyone have a electronic schematic to share? Did not find one in the previous posts.
I know nothing about guitar electronics and wonder if it would be possible in any way to wire following pick up configurations:

Bridge
Bridge + middle
Middle + neck
Bridge + neck
Neck

Thanks!

Well, Took me a few hours to re-read this whole thread again... Pity that quite a few photo links no longer work. Still, some good info here that will come in very handy

Nothing in this thread talks about the manufacturing dates stamped in the whammy bar cavity, so for completeness I am adding that...

In the thread "Yamaha SG-3 tear-down and restoration" on page 4, I found one of the remaining photos not having been obliterated. This one shows a white SG-3 with a date in the whammy bar assembly pocket as well as one in the neck pocket. The one in the latter looks hand written.

The photo is low res, so I have played around with contrast and brightness to bring out the numbers as clear as possible. I believe it shows: 7.41.21;
** Edit - found another photo of the neck which also shows the stamped date but this time very clearly; So it actually is 7.41.27 **

This means that the Showa date format is 'month.showa emperor year.day' so this date conforms to 21 July 1966. This stamp confirms my earlier assumption about the date in my SG-2 which shows 12.41.5. (Once I have removed the neck from my SG-2 I will update if it also shows a date in the neck pocket).

Here the photos:
