Fun 60's Univox Badazz

Post by HNB » Tue Apr 07, 2015 7:21 pm

I scored this cheap on ebay and it came in. I really like it. I want to swap out pots and the bridge, but otherwise it is pretty sweet! Nice red burst like the one on the ET-270 I had.

Bridge legs are wussy and it tilts. I ordered a Gotoh one.

Looks lovely. But i know nothing about univox, so looks alone thoughts. That redburst is very subtle, didnt notice it untill the back pics. Originaly thought itt was a shadow :fp: . Is that a hagstrom style trem? I havent seen any univox's with one like that before, from this forum or google search.

Soundclips?

I dig it also. I have no idea of what model it is either. The listing where I got it just called it a 60's Univox. Does look like a Hag tremolo. I will try to get a sound demo this weekend. :) Pickups are just like my "Mother" Univox.

Love it! It's got a Hagstrom vibe, including the trem ando overall shape, similar to a Hagstrom II or HN II. Really dig the knobs. Congrats!

I like the knobs also. Like the size of speed knobs, but metal. I also dig the Hagstrom vibe. I have a modern Hagstrom. Probably what drew me to it. :)

Cool guitar. It's a Univox Badazz. I am pretty sure that pickguard is someone's own rendition though. I've never seen one like that on it. It's originally more 61 sg like

Cool! Thanks for the info. I updated the thread name. The guard didn't look well made, but it is super old looking. The screws are all dirty and flat heads.

The Badazz U1820 guitar and U1820B bass were essentially bolt-neck copies of the new Guild S-100 introduced in 1970, the so-called “Guild SG.” This was a solidbody with slightly offset double cutaways. It had a bolt-on neck with a Gibson-style open book head, outlined decal logo, block inlays, bound 22-fret rosewood fingerboard (rounded end), two of the 12-pole humbuckers with the narrow center black insert, finetune bridge, Hagstrom-style vibrato (as found on early Guilds), two volume and two tone controls, plus three-way. The bass was the same without the vibrato and with dots along the upper edge of the fingerboard. These were available in cherry red, orange sunburst or natural (“naked”). List price for the guitars in ’71 was $199.50 with case, while the basses cost $220. These pickups, by the way, while being somewhat microphonic (as with most early Japanese units), scream, if you like a really hot, high-output sound.

I have around 30 guitars. In around 1976 I picked up a Univox Badazz (think it's a '73). It took awhile to eventually adjust the stock pickups to get a good and optimum sound. I love the neck. It just fits my hand so comfortably. Like it with heavier strings (11-52). It's still a favorite.
