Hi All,
I got a "66 Duo Sonic neck offered in very nice condition. Price is ok, so I might get it as it's the closest I can get to have a somewhat affordable 'vintage" neck.
I'll probably build a Jag in the near future, so this neck might be the start of that (a friend also offered me a set of SD Ant II for Jag, so I'm getting there)
But, the Duo Sonic II neck. I've seen and held this neck, stamped correctly 66B, ofcourse no binding or blocks, but I don't really care for that.
No tuners, but I guess, hope a set of Gotoh Klusons will fit here?
And since this neck is still in it's original finish, I would want to know if it's still Nitro or did Fender already switched over to Poly of some kind?
I did some calculations and with an Aftermarket body I would still be able to keep it below the price of a MIJ Jag. I would be using AVRI hardware + PG.
Probably go LPB on this one.
I guess from reading Fullerplasts adventures with the Shell Pink Jag, I guess a Duo Sonic II neck would fit the bill?
Thing is, I really would like something vintage Fender and a Jag is on my list. By going this route I get is for an affordable price. Kind of Vintage meets new.
As for specs/looks I'd like to keep it between the '62-66 period.

It should still be all nitro. I think it was 68 that they switched to poly for the bodies and iirc necks were a couple years later.

Duo Sonic necks are great! I had one (that I got from Doug) on my Jag for awhile. I eventually got an old '65 Jag neck though. The only issue with Mustang & Duo Sonic necks is that the base/heel is a bit narrower than a Jaguar. It'll work fine but there will be a slight gap on both sides in the pocket.

Thanks! I didn't knew that the heel was a tad smaller. I'll keep it in mind.
Do you have any measurments of the difference in heel width?
Since I'll probably will get an aftermarket body, I can perhaps specify this, so the pocket will be snugg.

I'll try to take a measurement for you when I have time... it's only a difference of like.... .60mm - .88mm on either side. You know, enough to slide a pick in there.
They tried to make the mustang and duo sonic necks more narrow all the way down because it intended for kids/students.
The Jaguar was considered a professional instrument so they made the neck base wider for adults.

Thanks again! So overall it's just 1.2 to 1.6 mm overall. Good to know this as well.
No hurry. But I think I might go ahead on this one.

i love my 66 musicmaster neck it's the same as the duo sonic, i believe...
i jsut bought some white button gotoh kluson RI tuners.. the ferrules were a little loose and the pegs fit fine, but the mounting screws were too long and i couldn't screw them in all the way, so i ended up stripped the one screw. D'oh! :-\
