NG(body)D... '66 Mustang... It's a guitar again!
Social distancing and ebay has led to a new guitar project. I'm not sure if this should go in vintage restorations or mods and projects, so I'll post it here. I mainly bought it because I wanted the neck plate for my 1966 Duo Sonic II, but after chiseling the bondo out of the pickup cavities I have decided to build it into a guitar. I've started wet sanding the body to smooth out some of the touch ups, and remove the clear coat that someone sprayed on it (which didn't stick) I'll post more pics later.

Re: NG(body)D... '66 Mustang
Aaahhhh!!! Help! What happened to this body??
There´s a mark for a Strat jack?
Marking for an extra routing for whatever...?
WHY filling the complete body with something whatever?
Ok, I am happy with you to see better days for this body.
keep us updated please!
...if you need good sounding PU´s I can recommend "Q-Pickups" from Croatia. (find them at ebay or Reverb)

I don't know what they were thinking. Fortunately they stopped before they got the router plugged in... and the bondo came out pretty easily. The strat output jack looking drawing on the body was drawn on and then clear coated over... EEESSHHHH. I've gotten a lot of the clear off with 1500 grit wet sanding. It's not gonna be a museum piece by any means, but I think I can make a decent mutt-stang out of it. I have a spare Duo-Sonic II neck I'm gonna put on it for now, and a set of Japanese Mustang pups...lunaticjaguar wrote: ↑Sun May 17, 2020 10:17 amummmmm.... so did they try to convert it into an acoustic????

Still more work to do, but I couldn't resist a mock up. I have an original pearloid pickguard on the way, the all parts guard doesn't fit right and is WAY too shiney.

Thank goodness it's in good hands once again.
Hmm, try and let that pickguard lie in coffee for a while and see if that helps? My '64 Mustang that I had up until three months ago, had the deepest pearloid pickguard I've ever seen. I've got a Squier Vista Series Venus XII and that pearloid pickguard in comparison looks hellacheap.

That neck is beautiful. I agree that either knocking down the stark whiteness of the pearloid or replacing with an old guard will help a lot.

lovely man.
I have a white '66 with a vintage pearl guard. If you're lucky, it will have turned all creamy and warm.
It makes all the difference.

I've been to one World's Fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing i ever heard come out a pair of headphones.

I'm glad you guys are diggin' it... The pickguard showed up today! I could do a little more work on the finish, and I'm still waiting on a Mustang bridge, but the old bridge off my Bass VI fit, so here it is!
It could use a neck shim at the moment, but I'm gonna wait for the Mustang bridge before getting into the setup details.
I think it goes well with my Duo Sonic II

Sorry, the pickguard doesn't show real well in these pics. I had to take them inside under flourescent lights, but it's actually a nice subdued pearl... almost buttery looking.

Rather like my Lazarus Mustang - anyone want to sell me 60s strap buttons and a string tree?

I've seen some weird guitar mods but filling the pickup cavities with bondo is a new one to me
Looks great now though!

Nice job bringing this back to life, actually really dig the finish wear on it.
