1975 mustang refret

Post by nickriot » Tue Jun 09, 2020 12:02 pm

Quick question... my '75 mustang is def approaching the time for a refret.
My questions are: Will this effect the value if/when it gets professionally done and should I have the luthier give me the old frets to keep along in the case or something?

if it's good work and improves the playability of the guitar, i can't see it reducing the value of it.

A refret is only going to improve the playability of the instrument. Its like changing strings or the nut to make it work. It shouldn't affect the price of it long term. Even if you used non-vintage spec fretwire someone could always replace it if it's a big enough deal to them. You're not carving out chunks of the body to put in a humbucker or anything...

A good re-fret is worth more than unplayable original frets. Although to a collector, perfect original frets are more desirable. I'd say, take it to someone you can trust won't tear out chunks of rosewood with the frets, and enjoy the guitar!

Agree with all of this. Unless you're planning on selling it today, get it refretted. Do your research as to who does the best work and don't skimp on paying the $100-$200 extra to get someone with a reputation for excellent work and experience with vintage/valuable guitars.

The old frets won't be of any use once removed, to keep in the case or for any other purpose.

David McComb, 1987.
