Clean up dark spot on chrome

Post by reiger » Mon Feb 28, 2022 7:07 am

Not exactly an offset, but it has some behind the bridge ringing, so I hope this will pass ;) I'm posting it here because this forum has the friendliest, most helpfull community ;D

I have this Epiphone Riviera which has developed a black and dull spot on the frequensator. Is this something I can restore/clean? Or is there no way back?

Can only go from the photos, but that looks an awful lot like the plating has worn through.

If so, not much you can do, rubbing with anything abrasive will only speed up the process of deterioration.

Agreed. I think you either take the patina as it comes or, if it really bothers you, look for a replacement part. Trying to clean it will only remove more plating, I believe.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Yep, that's a classic sign of thin chromium plating starting to age/wear. Live-with or replace I'm afraid

You could send the part to Advanced Plating in TN to be re-plated or just order a new one.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking already, no way to undo. Doesn't bother me that much, but I was planning on selling it.
Thanks for the help and tips!

That there is relicing, son. Some people pay more for that. ;)

I'm not into the 'relicing' thing at all, but there is a certain charm to that type of mild patina.

It certainly wouldn't stop me buying a guitar if it sounded and felt 'right'.

Indeed a Valensi, well spotted :)
In the meantime i sold it, with a little pain in the heart. I just didn't play it that often, and prices of these are going through the roof recently.

Flitz would probably brighten that up without harming the remaining plating, provided it's not flaking off already.
