Re-tremming some de-tremmed offsets (Fender Jaguar and Teisco TB-64)

Post by will » Sat Mar 02, 2024 5:15 pm

I wanted to try something new with a Jaguar I pieced together, but didn't want to repaint the body since it was originally Inca Silver - it took a lot of work to get the color right!

Looking around for a body to work on, I saw someone selling a Jag neck on eBay, so I asked if he still had the body.

He replied:

"I do but the tremolo rout was filled in with another piece of wood and the body was routed for a Kahler and fitted with a 25 1/2 scale neck.It was also painted yellow. Also, the workmanship of these of these mods was very poor.Chalk that one up to experience."

Sounds right up my alley! I figured great, something I can fix up, and won't feel bad painting whatever color. I offered him about what I paid for the Vox/Jazzmaster body a few years ago, and he came back with a LOWER offer. Hooray!

Image

Looks like the original trem rout is still hiding under the patch, filled with glue.

Image

Oh boy! Ferrules to patch, just like a fancy Fender Custom.

Image

A few days later, it showed up in the mail, and I pulled up the only brass shield that still remained in the body - looks like Candy Apple Red? I messaged the seller, and it was already refinished "natural" when he picked up the guitar in '82 or '83

Image

I scraped off the screamin' yellow paint, and found some markings that look like old factory refinish markings?

Image

That's a big 'ol plug

Image

Looks like he tried a few different pickup setups!

Image

I chiseled out the plug and found more CAR evidence

Image
Image

Looks like the neck pocket was made about 1/8" deeper

Image

I also saw a TB-64 body for a pretty cheap price, so I figured I'd fix it up (like my old avatar picture!)

The paint looked really lumpy in the pics - the poly finish makes for some really shoddy amateur refinishes.

Image

Stop bar tailpiece? sure.

Image

It looks like someone half-heartedly tried removing the finish with a bunch of bumps into a spindle sander

Image

Was the trem filled with a wooden marshmallow?

Image

Looking better after truing up the faces and edges

Image

I figured I'd true up the faces and edges and then use a router to make the edge radius consistent again. I'm basing the radius on an early TG-64 that I like a lot that has more carefully-sculpted contours than most I've seen. One of the nice things about fixing a Teisco is that they varied sooooooo much that I can have more leeway in fixing them, and it will still look right.

Image

Looking a bit more in order after routing the edges

Image

It had a few different tailpieces over the years. And who needs ground wires anyways?

This will be interesting...

Also: would like to see the kahlerized Jaguar in action with a mid-80s hair metal band. Any chance of getting a photo from the seller? Please?

Just tell them to blur all the faces (but not the hairdos!!!) before sending the photos?

It'd also be interesting to hear why they chose to kahlerize a Jaguar; was it the cheapest guitar they could find or did they just like the form factor but not the functionality?

I'm not sure what the reasoning was - it looks like it got the trem blocked off and hardtailed first, then got the wacky off-center Kahler routing. I've already asked the seller a bunch of questions, so I figured I'd wait until I have some "after" pictures to share before I pepper him with requests for more "before" pictures.

This one:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/256422376436

The neck is stamped 1965, but the undercoat on the Candy Apple Red is silver - I thought they had switched to a gold undercoat by then.

This would be incredible if it was a complete TB-64 restoration thread, so much so that I’d completely lose interest in the Jag. ;D

Do you have any further plans or are you just seeing it as a body-only project?

You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

Is there any difference between the TB64 and TG64 bodies? Bridge placement? Seems like it would be easy to interchange.
I have a stealth project to convert my wrecked NB4 to an almost TG64. Need two bass side “bow tie” tuners if anyone has some.

I picked up the bass version (NB-4) to use for the neck, and I have some of the square polepiece pickups, so I'll be putting it back together. They're actually nice to play. The neck is a lot more chunky/wide than a Bass VI.

I saw your thread - it looks like you have one of the early NB-4 basses. from when they did a nice job on the contours, and used different-colored woods on the neck to make it look like stripes. (they're my favorite Teiscos.)

The outline of the body is the same between the TB-64 /TG-64 / NB-4 / NB-1 / TR-320. ...though there is a lot of slight variation over the years - sometimes the contours are smooth, sometimes it looks like they hand-sanded the edges on their way out the door on a Friday and called it done. Sometimes the neck joint looks slick and Fender-like, other times, the neck pocket is super chunky and surrounds the neck heel on three sides.

The routing is different between guitar, 4-string bass, and 6-string bass. The TB-64 is routed for 3 pickups, a trem, and the handle cutout in the body. The necks are the same between 4 and 6 string basses - the 6-string just has 2 more tuners and no screw holding down the aluminum plate on the headstock.

I'm hoping to get the Teisco fixed up like this one I repaired ages ago:
