Looking great, Doug

Will the hardware get in the way of wet-sanding and polishing, or are you not going to need to do much of that?

Actually, I found on the headstock that I really didn't need to wetsand. I put the final coat on very thick and heavy duty polish took out whatever few fish eyes there were. I used progressively finer polishes after that. I didn't wax it yet, though... coz I want to try to yellow it in the sun.

I'll do the body the same way. It may be a little difficult around the bridge cups but not insurmountable. I already wetsanded the body pink in anticipation of clear before I touched up around the thimble and mute holes.

:)

Holy shmoly! - that looks great Doug, really great.

I've just made the same assembly on my 62 JM neck... but thats another thread.

Do you use regular Car wax?

:)

Do you use regular Car wax?
Yes.

I use McQuiers 3 Step:

1. Body Cleaner
2. Polish/Swirl Remover
3. Carnnauba  Wax

This is after final wetsanding or heavier compounds. I skipped the wax on the headstock. The body has not been cleared yet, I plan to do it tomorrow. I've wetsanded it already, but will hopefully only have to polish out the clear in a few days.

Others use 3M Finesse-It... same thing.. but I can get the McQuiers right down the street at the parts store. The 3M stuff is further away at the auto paint store.

It looks better to me than the first time! Tomorrow I'll pound the nails, flip it... and clear the bottom side.

I decided not to tape the thimbles. I'll just scrape the clear off the top. The sides are so thin that no one should notice.

I might just finish this project after all....

Thanks!

And talk about thin skin... this is only one can of pink (two coats of three passes front and rear) and one can of clear in the same method... over one coat of primer and one coat of nitro sealer, all over waterbased yellow dye. It should age nicely!

This last pass of clear went on really nice, it looks to need VERY little wetsanding, if any.  Hopefully I can just use compounds.

Nice!

Looks like it's got a really smooth surface - as you said - probably no sanding - it looks already buffed and polished in the pics!
